Considering the thread is about hearing loss, Sylvia's request to rtr on the previous page has fallen on deaf ears! Why doesn't he just say he's hard of hearing instead of going round the houses? :-S

this thread is NOT, repeat NOT, about a rocket attack, but about the possible cause of my hearing loss.

I went to the GP this afternoon.

As expected, she is referring me to an ENT person for evaluation, even asked me which hospital was closest to where we lived!

If the wait is long, then the hearing centre said in their report to her that they could find a temporary solution, and so I was to phone them direct after getting the date for the ENT.

She said "I don't want you getting into more trouble because you can't hear" :-D

I assured her that I don't go out alone ....... but didn't ask about how to stop O(H getting frustrated when I don't hear him. :-D :-|

She did check out my ears, nose and chest, and said things weren't too bad, so to continue with the saline nasal spray I've been using.

Unfortunately, she did detect a slight heart murmur, which is new, although heart troubles run in my family. So I have to watch that ...... it is only slight at the moment.

So now we wait again.


Afterwards we went for coffee to our favourite coffee shop, and two of our friends were there. One has hearing aids, and he took them out to show me ............. they're really tiny, fit right into his ear with a thin clear wire to hook over his ear. He can wear them, his glasses and a mask all at the same time.

Even better from my point of view ....... although you can control them a smart phone (which we don't have), you don't actually need one. He just takes the aids back to the hearing aid centre if the battery needs changes, and there is a tiny pin to push if you need temporary adjustment (eg in a noisier than usual situation). Otherwise, the centre sets them and will change the settings if major adjustments need to be made.

Of course, he got them free as his hearing loss is due to work place noise. I'll have to pay full price for mine as we-re not covered by any compensation or our Extended health Plan.

So now we wait

I had to have hearing aids about 18 months ago


Had a hearing test just to say see nothing wrong to my grandson who kept telling me I had the tv too loud


Well one done to me cos I did have a loss that was slight but needed correction as was told when the brain doesn’t hear a level it switches off that section . (Or something like that )

Anyway I opted for very small in ear ones made by oticon

No visible wires or objects around the outside of ears

Had to buy private and not cheap but am very happy with them

I am glad that you are being sorted out Sylvia. I chose ones without batteries. They sit in a little charger overnight, so there is never any need to change fiddly batteries. I can control them with my smart phone, but I don’t often need to. There is a very useful setting for when I am in a noisy place such as a restaurant, it cuts out all of the general background noise and concentrates on the voices of the people on the table. There is also a setting specifically for listening to music.
The one feature which I do use constantly is the Bluetooth connection which lets the aids work like earphones. If my mobile rings the sound goes directly to my right ear, so I can hear the call. I just have to speak normally and the caller hears me. It looks like I am talking to myself :-D. I do a lot of walking and listen to podcasts as I go, I can still hear traffic and anyone who talks to me, so it isn’t dangerous
As you don’t have a smartphone, those features wouldn’t apply to you, but I really do recommend the recharging option

It sounds like a good idea, to see how people cope with different sorts of hearing aids.

Since moving, my hearing has 'improved', in that, there isn't the constant background noise of a motorway.
I like to listen to the radio when I go to bed - I put it on a timer.
It used to be set at volume 11 or 12. Now it's 7 or 8!

I have a good idea which kind I would like, no idea how much they cost, but the decision partly lies with the hearing centre as to which they suggest would be best. Anyway, I think there is a short trial period.


Something that the hearing centre pointed out to me was that one of the first difficulties can be distinguishing between certain letters.

I'd already found that out during the test .......... one of the words had 5 letters, but only the last 4 were clear to me
