Kay, it's sad when they have to go.
George went before I could get him to the vet - but I bet it was his choice!
14 (same age as George) is a good innings, though. <3

Maggie, so sorry to hear your news. I know how much your cats meant to you and how much you'll miss him. Sadly I must go through the same thing next week with my 14 year old silver tabby. My very best wishes to you and Betty.

Sylvia, it's so sad he missed her :-(
I always let the live cat smell the dead cat - at least they know they're dead, and not missing.
As I said earlier, mine weren't 'snuggly' cats, but neither did they fight with each other.
I think Betty's confused at the moment, because any food she leaves (they had separate feeding bowls), is still there when she comes back in - and hasn't been scoffed by George! :-D

When my daughter had the two cats, the female was the one that was usually out meeting people, asking to be allowed on someone's knee once she'd got used to them. Her brother didn't like to be picked up by just anyone, it was preferably daughter's OH.

After she was put to sleep at age 16, her brother only lived another year, but in that time he became the snuggly one with anyone who would have him on their knee, but he especially loved curling up with my grandson.

But he also yowled every night for several weeks ........ they'd always slept curled around each other, and she had protected him right from the beginning, letting him curl up with her even as tiny kittens

I'm trying to get things ready for my visitor coming all the way in a basket from London to Devon - arriving on Saturday for a week or so.

This will be his second visit & he will be well treated by me - we had good times together last year - I hope he will remember me. :-D

Reading back, it sounds like I had/have little to do with Betty & George!
In reality, they 'did their own thing' with limitations - the killing of birds and sloworms was a no-no, and they tended to stay in my garden, or my nice neighbours garden.

Initially I had 3 cats. Their brother 'Mister' was the boss. He slept on my bed, and stayed in the house a lot. The cats never snuggled up together, in fact, if they stayed in, they slept in different rooms.

When Mister was put to sleep, about the same time, 4 years ago, George took over as 'sleeper on the bed' and 'protector of the feeder'. He got bored after a couple of years, and found a much more interesting tree.
Betty 'I may be the size of a kitten, but these small claws are really sharp' wouldn't demean herself to sleep on my bed. She rarely went upstairs - apart from occasionally to sit on a windowsill and survey the neighbourhood.

When we moved here they (particularly George), were terrified, so I spent the move sat with them in the bathroom - hence I'm still trying to find things, and the spare bedroom is a mess.
The first night - BOTH of them slept on my bed - both snuggled up to me, so I did have a use, apart from being feeder and heating provider.

Then they wanted to go out and explore, but 'nasty' me kept them in.
Betty, in particular hated this. Even now, she comes no further than the living room door (and howls) if she wants something, as if I'm going to get her in, close the door, and make her stay in again!
Both she and George 'tried' the front garden, but the wall is only a foot high, dogs are constantly being walked up and down the street, and they never seemed to work out how to get from the front garden to the back (via next door), so I went out with them, leaving the front door open, but they didn't find it appealing.
Enclosed back gardens are much safer!

So, just me and Betty now, and I'm intrigued to see if her behaviour changes, at such an old age.<3

That is such sad news Maggie. <3 <3. I still miss our old friends being about the place. :-)

Sad to say, George has passed over to the tree in the sky.
His 'getting fat' was oedema. I couldn' t afford to pay for the number of tests needed to establish the cause (heart, liver, kidneys etc etc) - and he would have been15 years old on July 1st.
I was due to take him back to the vet to be put down on Tuesday, but he died on Monday (did he know?)

I called Betty over to say goodbye before I buried him.
She took a couple of sniffs, looked at me, and went back to where she'd been.

Talking to my sister, I said I couldn't remember George's 'favourite place' in the house since moving here - or, for that matter in the old house - that would be because he preferred being outside, either up a tree, or under a shrub!!
Although he did have a phase of sleeping on top of one of the kitchen cupboards here - while I was trying to paint the kitchen!

At least Betty is visible from the kitchen, or my bedroom window - unless she's alseep in a 'nest' she's made in the long grass.

Mr Tibbs absolutely adores his hooman at the moment

She keeps buying him Amazon boxes with packaging in them


Well really were for me as had to buy various aids like a corner shower seat , food tray to attach the NHS walking frame etc to help me get around but Tibbs is oh wow another box I can sleep in even if it's a bit small !

He has a big cosy soft padded bed but Amazon boxes are more comfy it seems ;-)
