I think I must have led a very repressed childhood as I came across very few of the delicacies mentioned here :-(

Yes, Maggie. We never took those to school but at home we had condensed milk butties and sugar butties. Funnily enough, I could take or leave the sugar ones but the condensed milk ones were, as you say, yummy! :-D

My Mum used to love leftover brussels in a sandwich or on toast. I've tried them and they are quite nice - trouble is if I have leftovers from a dinner I usually have enough to plate another dinner for the following day.

Mum also used to like sliced apple and cottage cheese in a sandwich. <3

I like peanut butter and sandwich spread sandwiches with a bit of salt on. Then we coe to peanut butter and Branston. Picallili and Haywards clear pickle sandwiches.

As a child, we used to have margarine or butter and sugar sandwiches, and yummiest of all, condensed milk sandwiches. :-D

I like cottage cheese with strawberries in a sandwich, or Emmenthal and apricot jam.

I like peanuts, but peanut butter - you can add me to the hate list! When my nieces started school in Newfoundland they were told to bring a "healthful snack" for lunch, such as a peanut butter sandwich.

Banana sandwiches were popular with my sister, but by the time bananas were available after the war, I was considered too old for such things!!

I spent a short time at boarding school, where condensed milk sandwiches were popular, and my sister liked sugar in sandwiches. Both those I found too sweet.

I meant to ask. I have some cashew nut butter that's been in our food store 'out the back' for a couple of months and I have not yet tried it (waiting to finish the jar of crunchy peanut butter first). I bought it because I like cashews.

Has anyone on here tried it? If so, what did you think about i?

From summer terms at school (and sorry, folks, sandwiches are still called butties in our house):

Banana and Mars bar butties
Beef crisp butties

and home:

Fried bacon & fried banana butties
Grated dark chocolate butties

Dripping on bread (I know I won't be the only one there!) - the brown bits were the tastiest.

And, when in Oz:

Vegemite and peanut butter butties.

Love asparagus butties sprinkled with white pepper and got to be thickly buttered.

Love beans on toast with vegemite.

Just thinking of what we girls took for summer lunches brings back great memories. Our parents just let us go for it and our imaginations worked fifty to the dozen. <3

But am glad to find that there are other peanut butter leathers out there.

Mr Owl and I did buy one deep fried Mars bar between us to try. Neither of us found it revolting but it didn’t add anything. We wouldn’t try it again. There is a chip shop on the north side of the city though that as long as you buy the chocolate bar from them will deep fry any chocolate.

Another food that is popular here that I haven’t tried but Mr has is called a Pizza Crunch. A pizza crunch is a deep fried pizza.

Peanut butter I like but not on a sandwich for some reason.

Speaking to a Dutch lady the pizza topped with chips and curry sauce seems to be a version of something that started in the Netherlands called a Kapsalon

Ooooh Sylvia, the smell of peanut butter makes my stomach heave!! My son loves it but I can't be in the kitchen when he's using it. I thought probably it was an American thing with the banana.

Chippies here do deep fried loads of chocolate mars-bars bars, snickers etc. Very popular. I've not tried them and they don't appeal to me but I think a lot are sold. Each to their own!!

peanut butter with banana, or with jam is the usual way of eating it in the US..

peanut butter with marmite is not unknown in the UK or here in Canada

Australians & NZ both often have peanut butter and vegemite (a vegetarian version of marmite).

I stop right at peanut butter ...... I can't stand even the smell of it. My poor hard-done-to daughter had to make her own sandwiches from the age of 5 or 6 if she wanted peanut butter!



I think the deep fried mars bar that I first saw in a Glasgow chippie back around 1987 is still my weirdest one, even though I know it even became popular over here.

I saw an item on tv a few days ago where they spread a slice of bread with peanut butter, which immediately means yuk to me but they then sliced banana on top of it!!
When I was a child I often ate a "nana butty" with sugar sprinkled on top of it but I don't think I could eat it now, even without the sugar.

A takeout in Edinburgh has started selling a cheese pizza topped with chips and curry sauce. I have tried chips, cheese and curry sauce before but have never seen the appeal so I don’t see how adding it to a pizza will help the taste.
