I grew up in Hampshire. We only wore summer uniform dresses in the term that finished with the start of the 6 week summer holiday. When we returned in September we were in winter uniform. (This was in High school. As far as I remember we didn't have a uniform in primary school (infant or Junior. My school days were 1945 -1951 (I didn't go on to 6th form.

I just don’t remember the autumn wear.i just don’t think Mum would have splashed out on a new summer dress just for a few weeks.

Where do I live. Southern England ( I can just about hear the M4). Used to live in East Kent bought up on Surrey / London border.

I lived in south of England until i left to come here so well remember that at secondary school, we always returned around 6 Sep and had to wear our Green/white striped summer dresses with a blazer right up until the half term holiday in October. When we returned it was winter uniform, skirt, shirt, tie, jumper or cardigans and green gabardine rain mac
We were not allowed to wear bottle green trousers until 3rd year.

But here in the far west, we always have had a good May, wet and midgy Jul/ Aug then a warm September except this year has not been that at all. So many gales through the summer months, back to back. Many were complaining their gardens were so behind and people growing veg etc had a very poor year.

I now have new buds of roses nearly opening on several rose bushes :-S

Joan, what a lovely rose you found and in jack's name, how wonderful. Hope it flourishes and does well for you.

So glad you got out for a coffee too. I hope you can meet up again soon and make it a regular meet up and that will be something to look forward to.

As for cyclists, they are still around in their droves. I have seen some today, soaking wet with the dense fog...torture nothing but torture!!

I got a couple of parcels today containing xmas pressies i have ordered online along with wrapping paper etc so I can get a good start. I shall have to order more stamps before oct with my shopping as they are going up to £1.65 for 1st class!!
Shall have to make sure all the family and friends cards that get a gift, get their cards in the same package to save on stamps.

Well, im feeling chilly and may have to put the heating on in a bit! off to make a cup of coffee to warm me up.

So wet yesterday, very overcast today and more rain due tomorrow.

I was behind a father in the supermarket last week, he was buying school summer dresses :-S. Bet he wishes he hadn't.
I'm sure we went back to school in our winter uniform - I'm not sure summer dresses were allowed ( and probably didn't fit ;-)

so long ago - maybe we could wear the dresses until half term if it was warm. No one around to ask now.

Same here - not so hot as yesterday, but still a lovely sunny warm day.

the west of Scotland always used to have beautiful weather in April/May. and again in September, but rain during the school summer holidays in July/August.

This year has been a return to that - but just a lot colder and wetter in June/July/August than usual.

The tourist traffic seems to be thinning out at last.
I usually try to avoid going to town on a Saturday, but I went today, and found the road quieter than I'd expected, with far fewer campervans and cyclists holding up the traffic than has been the case through the "summer".
A pleasant surprise!

Not the best summer here either - mostly wet! But yesterday was lovely, with very hot sunshine all day and a slight breeze. (Too hot for me, but there were lots of people swimming in the sea.)

I hate to rub it in, but today is the same, only not quite so hot. The forecast for the next few days is the same, although there's no guarantee it's accurate!! It's actually what September always used to be like - cool nights and sunny days - just as we all went back to school. :-)

I think it’s indoor jobs for most of England tomorrow as there is a huge yellow rain warning. :-\

Morning all.
Certainly was not the hottest summer up here either but the worse summer in 31 years....no sun!

Its thick fog again today and that has meant we cancelled our day out as where we were going is over an hour away on country narrow roads some with no markings so we are staying put.

So far planes are delayed. so no post and I think the ferry is also behind schedule. I now have Tesco from 7-9 that's if they comes

So indoors day today but plenty of jobs to be getting on with.

Hi Ann, I’m not surprised having seen that huge band of rain on the satellite pictures yesterday, and it felt freezing when I got up this morning. I bet all those MP’s switched their heating on :-P

We might get a bit of warmer weather on two weeks.

It has just been announced that this summer was the hottest for some time - just not here. So you are forgiven ;-)

Your poor OH. He is having such a time and so many new places and new people to get used to. You are his only constant - I’m sure he’ll get used to his new life eventually.

I'm sorry, I did debate with myself as to whether I should say that we had a heat wave having seen reports of weather in the UK! :-)

But it is going to be hotter today than yesterday, so it is nice to know that I don't have to go out, even just to get into and out of cabs and walk very short distances into either of the buildings, as I've been doing for so many weeks!

Instead, I will just have to walk a couple of corridors with fans blowing to keep them cool, down in the elevator, round the corner and into the area where OH has his room, and with a fan! We had so many fans at home and we moved all the ones that worked well into our new places!

I have to admit he has been a bit obstinate with the nurses and aides, telling them he doesn't want to try this on, and no he won't let them look at that.. So ..... guess what ............ I'm "cornered" when I go into his area and asked will I make him do whatever it is.

He then becomes meek and lets them do whatever test or exam they need to do!

It's so unlike the person he was. :-(

I did see the other rose called Jacks Wish, but I thought it a bit pinky in colour & the name didn't seem right for me ! & my Jack wasn't one for wishing !
The one I chose is a Plum Red cololour & is also a Floribunda which I like & they seem to do well in my garden, so hoping this new one does as well as my other Floribundas have done.

You had a busy time yesterday tackling your grass, it's not a job I have ever done, far too much grass around my house for me to tackle, my hubby had a hard enough time doing it even as a young man. My son in law took it on when hubby could no longer do it but this year he has been so busy on the farm my daughter took it on, she found the 1st cut really hard going but has managed much better from then on, she actually does a better job than her hubby, LOL.

It's HOT and sunny here today - lovely! We're not used to this!
Yesterday was beautiful, too, but today is hotter.

I cut most of the grass yesterday. It was a long and tiring job, as the grass had grown so long during all the wet weather when I couldn't cut it, but I'm so relieved to have had a chance to do it at last.
I'm just about to go and cut the last bits which I didn't have enough energy to finish yesterday. Making hay while the sun shines!

Hello to all.
It's been a nice day here today, the sun has been shining & no wind so it has been nice warm, no idea of the temp but warmer than yesterday.
It was a really dismal day yesterday with a very "wet" mist hanging over us pretty much all day.

I was out to Morrisons to get my weekly shop but before that my daughter & I met up with a good friend & his daughter for a coffee in the Morrisons cafe, this friend used to work with my hubby (Posties) for many years until their retirement & we became good friends over the years.

We didn't actually socialise but kept in contact & had good long chats whenever we bumped into each other when out & about, this Postie friend was always there for us over the years particularly if we ever we had car problems.

Our friend lost his wife just before I lost my hubby, & since then we have chatted to each other several times over the phone as a result of all of that, that's why we met up yesterday, him & his daughter & me with mine.
His daughter has been ill since she lost he mum but is doing well now, so it was good to see her as well.

We had a lovely hour chatting about soo many things, it was actually the first time I had been OUT for a coffee in many a year, hubby was never that keen, preferring to go home for a cuppa, LOL.

I ordered a new plant (online) this week & hoping it will be delivered tomorrow.
It's a Rose called..... Jacks Rose..... & so I hoping it thrives, it was rather expensive but it was the only one I could find with the name of Jack.

Well the 18 degrees promised here didnt happen and the fog is very dense as can hardly see up the rd!



I will have to take my rain jacket over my new suit jacket as I can see the fog/mist being moved across in the air and i think one would get pretty wet if you were walking outside. :-(

Well it was 17 degrees most of the morning then an hour ago the sun came out and it is now 22 degrees.

It is a lovely day here Florence, sunny, but only 23, not the 25 degrees we were promised. I have the washing line full outside and it is windy, so they should dry.

I am glad that your moves are over Sylvia. Having aircon will be good for you even if it is noisy. I am sure that you will get used to that and it will be much better for than trying to survive the heat in your old house.

Fog, fog & more fog :-( It hasn't lifted and def no sun grrrr More like November today and def no heatwave here!

Good morning from a very drizzly, dark Gloucestershire. It is 17 degrees so not too cold but so cheerless. Hopefully it will brighten up soon as it feels like it should be November at the moment.

glad you and OH are more or less settled Sylvia. Hopefully a few good nights sleep will sort you out, it sounds like OH's moving day was a bit traumatic/tiring.
