OH's mother died in Worthing and we live in Scotland, so her probate was granted in Carlisle, the nearest place in England.

The probate office in Oxford would be much much closer.

Surely it is more likely that the executor lived in Suffolk..

It’s where the local probate office is

We live in Kent but I had to send all the documents for probate to Brighton in 2015 when hubby passed away in Rochester


There has been a probate registry in Maidstone but that one closed down

Whoever was dealing with the estate, the executor, would apply in an area convenient to them self.
When applying for probate, you can go to any Probate Registry. You do not have to go to the one nearest where the person died.

There can be unexpected results when one discovers where probate was granted.
During the 2nd World War many Wills nationwide were granted at Llandudno.

In the area where I live here, probate is now granted through Brighton.

A person that lived and died in the same county, Berkshire have probate 6 months later in Ipswich?
