We can today announce the contract to publish the 1921 Census online has been awarded to British & Irish family history website Findmypast, in association with the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The census, which was the first to be conducted following the introduction of the Census Act of 1920, will be published in early 2022.

Taken on 19 June 1921, it consists of more than 28,000 bound volumes of original household returns containing detailed information on close to 38 million individuals.

The project will see Findmypast capture digital images and transcribe text data in a way that will enable family historians across the globe to conduct meaningful searches of these important records for the very first time."

I'm willing to be that FMP paid a pretty penny for the privilege.

I don’t think I will be bothering to pay any extra as there is only one personI have any mild interest in finding.

Quite a few of my rellies were born after the 1911 census and before the 1921 census so it will be interesting to find them.

I was considering giving up my Findmypast subscription as there is so little looking up to do for anyone on Genes and I'm not really doing any serious research for myself but I decided to keep it just so I can look at the 1921 census next year.

Luckily we both know where our rellies were living and what they were doing. There is just one great uncle I would be interested in. He was getting divorced at the time and I lost all trace of him.

Even with a sub there is likely to be an extra charge for the census for a period of time.

FMP has stated several time that 1921 census is to come out January 2022

No subscription will cover the 1921 census it will be pay per view.

I use Ancestry but might do a couple of ppvs on FMP because I am keen to see Frd on the census.

Mum.born 1909 always said she was a live in kitchen maid in a boys school and worked her way to be a cook general

She married dad Christmas Day 1929 and was back in the family home then


Had been for some time because another story was on a Sunday she and her sisters wouid wash dresses and hang them out to dry and dad ,who lived next door , chatted to her over the garden wall saying not another one when she was pegging a dress on the line .

He asked her out and she said yes but didn’t turn up and he wouldn’t speak to her for yonks

But they sorted it and later married in 1929

Have you looked for school log records for your Mum?
Would she have left school by 1921... I'm not sure of the leaving age then?

Anyone remember one New Year Eve when GR gave free access to the 1911 census? The system became rather overloaded.

1918 Education Act moved leaving age from 12 to 14 yrs so in 1921 your mother was still at school.

I was disappointed that the 2011 census only asked for given name and family name, no middle names.
Future family historians are going to have a hard job identifying which John Smith was living where!

I read somewhere about 16 year olds being asked their sexual orientation. I don’t think I even saw a census form until after I got married. The census had been completed by one of my parents about 3 years previously when I was about 20.
Isn’t it likely the same sort oft thing will happen and the parent will just fill in what they think.?

We got a card in the post yesterday telling us to expect the census forms next month.

Findmypast say that people will be able to search the 1921 census for free but will have to pay to view the details but they haven't decided what the cost will be just yet. They also say that there may be a slight delay after the January date they were expecting to have it ready for release because of delays caused by Covid.

nameslessone - You'd be surprised at the number of adults who cannot read or write.

And it's not easy to coach & encourage such mature 'students' during 'Evening Classes'.

So you expect the teenager or younger child to be honest about the sibling they’ve just argued with. Or even the parent who has just refused them something.

Will the illiterate want to discuss their hidden sexuality with a next door neighbour who may be helping them. I think not.

I am looking forward to finally getting to see the 1921 census. It is going to be so radically different from the 1911.

In 1911 the world was still at peace and comparatively affluent where most houses had a male breadwinner.

Ten years on we will be looking at a country that had endured four years of war AND a pandemic with many, many disabled men.

On Ancestry this week I found a cousin listed on the 1939 Census and she is still alive. Her maiden name and dob were there and, as most of you will have seen, her married name was written above in green ink. On the same screen was reported (RH side) a death for a person of that name.

Someone had been over-zealous or misinformed. I fired off a note explaining that they had got the wrong person so we'll see what comes of it.

I'd like to know where my gran was living in 1921.
She would have been 13.
Gran's mum died shortly after she was born, in 1908. In 1911, gran was living with her father's parents.
She claimed to have been brought up by her aunt, in a shop the family ran in Pennycomequick. I've discovered this 'shop' was an insurance agent's 'shop'!
