I absolutely love flowers ,and gardening

Hubby always said I had a green thumb

My absolute best present for birthdays etc is flowers which my family know

Hubby would buy me flowers for anniversary’s and I miss that

So every week when I did my shopping pre COVID I would buy flowers from a flower stall in the shopping precinct

Get my weekly shop delivered now from sainsbury and still include flowers for me

I order from their availability but sometimes they substitute and if dearer give difference in a credit
Win win really

This week I ordered my usual £3.50 chrysanthemum bouquet but they substituted a beautiful bouquet of of mixed Roses costing £5!

So I will get a refund too!

Last weeks chrysanthemums are still ok so now got a beautiful big vase of flowers

Know hubby would say good on yer girl. Lol

:-D

It’s just one of the things I miss from hubby

I know he would take time looking and ordering so it was even more special to get a doorstep delivery

I buy myself flowers sometimes, hubby does have some sent or pays for them when we go food shopping but what he doesn't do is actually carry them.

I have bought myself flowers regularly since the time back in 92/93 when OH went to Australia for several months, daughter went with him but I stayed here. I found having a vase of flowers on the kitchen counter cheered me up.

Then I continued when they came back, every time OH & I did the weekly grocery shop, I would go and choose flowers .

OH has been doing the weekly shop by himself for 3 or 4 years now, and I still add flowers to the list.

It's usually mini carnations, alstroemeria, daffodils in January/February, or similar.

The only time we don't pick flowers is before the holidays when flowers are traditionally given as presents, eg Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc, because the price shoots through the roof.

So ................ imagine my surprise when OH came home with a dozen red roses on Friday, for Valentine's Day!!!

For 55 years, it has been our habit to only exchange cards at Valentine's because it is so commercialised over here (buy diamonds, buy a fur coat, but this fancy car, etc etc).

The roses are lovely ......... long long stems, a few large prickles, called Freedom.

OH has always bought flowers for our anniversary ............ he used to try to buy the same flowers that were in my wedding bouquet, but that got harder for one reason and another. Now he will buy the roses and freesias, but not try to get the other flowers.

Shirley, while I don't buy flowers regularly, I usually get flowers delivered for Christmas for my daughter, granddaughter, daughter-in-law and bestie. Christmas gone, I included myself in that list.

Like you, I love freesia and roses and we all got the M & S Christmas flowers that included white roses and freesia just before Xmas. The smell from the freesias was lovely. <3

My absolute favourite flower is the rose, any variety

I have several in front and back gardens even though the gardens aren’t that big

I have miniature ones in the back so can have different colours

We had the front garden paved over many moons ago with a raised bed to one side with more miniatures in it

The opposite corner is a small ground level semi circle bed with a rose that is over 50 years old that I insisted on saving when the front was done because of it’s beautiful colour rose that changes colour as it opens

Yes it does suffer with blackspot too but it gets sprayed regularly

Love dahlias too but can’t stand the earwigs so stopped trying to grow them

Shirley, we only have a couple of miniatures and two climbers now because all of our hedges are evergreens - which I prefer during winter.

When I walk to the shops, I take an ancient public footpath so I can see quite a bit of the back garden of a house we moved into in 1973 before moving overseas. We had a lot of roses then, particularly climbers over an arch and along a rustic fence. They seem to have gone but the new owner has a rose hedge around his front garden where previously we'd planted azalea hedging.

My Dad loved roses and had several in his beautiful garden. He came late to gardening though, unlike his brother who had a huge garden and an allotment with flowers and vegies - to our benefit. <3 <3

I used to buy my self flowers when I went shopping but since lockdown I have ordered flowers online to 'treat' myself.
Since this last lockdown hubby has treated me to quite a few on line flowers but I have to order them as he dosnt do computors. lol.
Needless to say I appreciate them just as much.

Shirley, about spraying the roses. Do you use a manufactured spray or soapy water? Soapy water works as long as you cover all of the leaf.

Of course, you may know that already so I apologise if it seems as though I'm teaching you how to suck eggs. <3
