A lot will depend on the time period.

For Ireland there is also www.rootsireland.ie.

A relative had amazing success by taking out a free ancestry trial for the South African version. Luckily family were still living in the house listed in a 1960’s telephone directory.

A lot a English libraries are still offering free online access to Ancestry Library( similar to world) for library card holders.
