Allan, I always have 2 small torches beside my bed on chest of drawers all year round and if i get up during the night for the bathroom, i always take a wee torch with me just in case the power goes and im stuck on the "throne"!

I also have a small portable charger for my phone. You charge it up and it gives power for around 4 hours and keeps for around 3 months.
I carry this in my handbag incase battery dies and i broke down in the car.
If you havent got one of these, its worth buying one.Over here they vary in price but mine was £14.00 online.

Hope your power is sorted now

Edit: Gwyn you reminded me of the miners strike in the 70's when we only had power for 4 days a week. We had to carry a candle on a saucer to the loo and we were quite young too!

Elizabeth, we do keep a kit of various items in case of Bush Fires or other emergencies as we are constantly warned that if anything major happens it could be at least three days before things are back to normal; this goes under the snappy title of 'Only You for 72'

In the case of Thursday night's outage, my phone required recharging as I tend to do this in the mornings. We do have a supply of candles etc for just such occasions but stumbling around in the pitch black to locate them could result in some very sore shins and foul language :-D

Rollo, I do wear a watch, but like my phone it is just a basic one, no lights, whistles or bells. I work on the principle that when I go to bed at night I go to sleep, not play with my watch or make phone calls.

After twenty years of very early morning walks I am a pretty good judge of time by the position of the stars and by the perceptible changes in the colour of the sky just prior to dawn

Where we used to live we were always having power cuts ( over head power lines v. Trees) and no water - this one was down to dodgy mains pipes and estate staff who would cut off the water and then go for lunch.

We always had to keep a plentiful supply of candles, matches and bottled water. We also had to make sure there was gas in the camping gas cylinder.

We list all power and heating for days after the infamous hurricane and a later storm.

Oh the joy of moving out, downhill into the village proper.

Allan
I hope the power supply is more reliable now.

My worst experience of power cuts was back in early 70s.
We lived in an upstairs flat in Cyprus with no piped gas and had a continuous power cut for several days.
Boiling water to make bottles for our baby son was quite an adventure. We had to utilise an Aladdin stove and the gas cannister room heater.

I don’t think Allan’s OH will appreciate being called a Tea’s Maid. I think she probably has a Tea Boy. :-D

A useful tool for morale is a rechargeable torch. Mine said '20 hours' when I got it -
never tested it that long! .currently says '12' in catalogue which is helpful. Can't help with air conditioning of course! But I do try to keep phone, tablet, ebook charges to keep me distracted!

Thanks, Florence :-)

I've being trying to rack my brains (well what passes for my brain) to recall where I saw something a few days ago about the replacement of a power pole near to where we live.

The article, or whatever, only mentioned road detours. Normally we are advised if there is to be any outage due to maintenance etc.

The sooner the overhead powerlines are placed underground the better

Oh Allan. where i am, we are so used to the power going off during storms or lightening. I always have a torch in my pocket once its dark like tonight as there is a strong gale blowing. I never set electric clocks and have battery ones.

Its jolly annoying when you have just turned on the computer and then it goes off again...indeed it is! Sometimes its like a disco with the lights going on and off..lol

Hope you get it back and nomore outages.

Power went off at eleven last night and with it the air-con in the bedroom.

Power wasn't restored until about an hour ago. Adjusted all the clocks that had to be adjusted, set my phone to charge and cranked up the computer......then the bl**dy power went off again! :-|

Fortunately, this was only a short half an hour hiatus , but the resetting of the clocks can wait until later
