That's right Kense.

We are in the next UK group so, like Sylvia in Canada (who is in the age group above ours), we are patiently waiting our turn as they are still vaccinating 80+ in our area and, of course, those who ought to have it - such as nursing staff, paramedics and policemen, all of whom ought to have been vaccinated first, in my opinion.

Hopefully, some freedom (albeit still with a mask in public places) will beckon us some time in July as I am roughly estimating our second jab will be by June, so have added three weeks for efficacy.

Has anyone been surprised by the belief of some older people that once vaccinated they will be able to do away with a face covering when they are out and about? No regard for others - which is exactly what is being said about those currently not wearing face masks.

Kense Report 14 Jan 2021 09:09

There are 3.2 million people over 80 in he UK, about 1.5 million have had their first jab and the target rate is about 200,000 per day. So it will be a least a couple of weeks before all over 80s are done.

We're being asked not to pester either our doctors or the health authorities.

We'll be contacted either by email or phone when it is our turn, but they're busy and don't yet know anything themselves.

We're both over 80, but are patiently waiting until we're contacted.

Just made my appointment after receiving the letter. First one on Friday and second one 26 March. Apparently this clinic on Friday has only just been confirmed.

Sue in Yorkshire I'm 80 with serious health probs incl terminal cancer. I had the first jab of two Friday evening. Very well organised apart from fact was in a bar but bar wasnt open! lol Attended at time slot, no wait, jabbed, waited the required 15 mins in case I popped me clogs then straight home. Think twas organised by a group of surgeries as I was offered the jab when someone from my surgery rang and asked if I wanted jab. - this in sunny Donny in Yorkshire. Had sore arm til yesterday. At 0530hrs Saturday was woken by vertigo, nausea, pins needles both hands etc not nice but more or less back to normal by lunch time. I took with me top part of a prescription as it had all my details incl NHS number and volunteer was most happy being able to copy data from that. Twelve weeks til 2nd jab. Hope you get yours soon

Like Andysmum, I googled Yorkshire sites.

There are a good number of vaccination centres in Yorkshire, Sue.

Has someone been pulling your leg, by any chance?

nameslessone Report 11 Jan 2021 18:55

Apparently only 2/5 this of over 80’s have received the jab, so it is hardly surprising that some on here haven’t had it yet.
Some pharmacy’s and supermarkets are set to host the jabs in Yorkshire.

The site in Manchester must be one of those super sites. There are lots of people who find them too far but lots of smaller sites are starting up but are probably linked to groups of surgeries.

Thats all right saying that but the nearest point for Anyone in Yorkshire is Bloody Manchester.

If the government put transport ie patient ambulances on for the over 90's 80's and all those that are shielding because of previous illnesses that we have to shield for.

Then I will take the ambulance.

One thing people have forgot about is the money the government are saving in OAP PENSIONS.

No chance of me travelling at least 80 miles for the injection .I was told by the doctor in our surgery that we would have them coming to the door to give the injection.

Which is pretty much what they've said all along, Andysmum - across all of England too.

Sue, I don't know which bit of Yorkshire you are in, but I found this for North Yorkshire by Googling and it is similar advice to what many of us are getting.

‘Nobody will miss out’

Amanda Bloor, NHS North Yorkshire CCG Accountable Officer and chair of the North Yorkshire group of NHS and local government Chief Executives, added:

“We understand patients’ enthusiasm to have the COVID vaccine, but it’s important those at most risk from coronavirus are vaccinated first. Please do not contact your local GP Practice or local hospital to ask for an appointment for a vaccination and please do not turn up at your surgery or hospital – the NHS will proactively contact individuals as part of the vaccination programme and nobody will miss out.”

When it is the right time for you to receive your vaccination, you will receive an invitation to come forward. This may be via the phone, or through a letter either from your GP or the national booking system.

nameslessone Report 11 Jan 2021 13:47

Sue, the contact will usually be from your surgery - some are just not proactive. Many surgeries have refused to do it themselves.

Check your surgeries website to see if there are updates.

Everyone else seems to be lucky as the counties all have vaccination places to go BUT YORKSHIRE.

No place in Yorkshire for people to contact anyone about a vaccination.

I am nearly 80 with COPD.
Not heard anything.

My pal rang last night.

She told me about a 92-year-old we know who lives in the next street to us. She had bumped into him around lunchtime during one of her short walks. He was on his way back from the shops.

At one stage his nephew was doing his shopping but his nephew caught covid so the old man has been out every morning to shop - which was his usual routine before March 2020. He told my pal that he had not heard anything about his vaccination.

In this case, it would not surprise me if the surgery had been trying to contact him when he was out for his daily shop. (Why a daily shop, I have no idea but that was his usual routine before last March.)

I told her to tell him to stay in one morning and ring the surgery as I feel they may have tried to contact him when he was out doing his morning shop! He is a very cluey old guy and I am surprised he had not thought of that as he is fully compos mentis, by the way.

I live in the Midlands and just in the last week I have heard of a lot of over 80s starting to get the vaccine I am nearly 71 and in the high risk bracket but just glad that there is light at the end of the tunnel, they have set up a hub between where I live and northampton where they are giving the vaccine. I'm glad that at long last nurses have started to recieve it and teachers have been upgraded

I would give up my vaccine to a younger working person too, I'm used to lockdown now and know how to cope. Though I'd love to have a holiday in the summer.

JoyLouise Report 7 Jan 2021 08:01

Our local news programme has just announced that all surgeries in our area will be vaccinating.

Can't be too long now folks.

Having said that, If I had a choice I'd opt to give my jab to one of my children as they are much more in the firing line than I am, having worked right through - one doing twelve-hour days, already tested with antibodies and with six of his colleagues suffering from covid on Xmas Eve.

I'd be quite happy to stay in for longer as long as long as they were safer.

Apparently, India's 18-59 year olds are being given the vaccine first so the economy can get back on track.
