Aubers Ridge was a ghastly failure, which threatened to undermine the authority of the Commander-in-Chief, Sir John French – indeed the subsequent Shell Scandal toppled the Liberal Government. The Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener only just survived, because political attention was perhaps conveniently diverted to another, larger failure, at Gallipoli.

Alas, lions led by donkeys springs to mind, Rollo.

I don't know who coined that phrase but sometimes it was deadly accurate.

One lion leading lions springs to mind - Admiral Andrew Cunningham in WW2; his flagship the Warspite.
