Maggie, that's exactly what original mivis were. I think they made a comeback years later and just weren't the same.
I'd never heard of splits except as a ballet move :-0

Tawny, When you mentioned 'Split' along with 'Mivi', I (unlike others, it seems) :-D
immediately thought of Ice lollies with ice cream in the middle and fruit ice lolly outside! :-S
'Mivis' are the originals, 'Splits' are the other producers.

J L description of "peach melba" cakes is bang on.

I had some madeleines baked by O.H. with my bowl of coffee for breakfast :-)

As a gesture of solidarity OH has been baking trad English cakes and sending them to London friends and rellies stuck at home.

fat rascals, Bakewell tart, cabinet pudding, treacle tart, ginger parkin
:-)

I remember when I could do the splits :-D

Iced finger cream split. The icing is too much.

The split I remember had the split on the top.

Splits are like a bread roll but taste different they are lovely with jam and clotted cream and even lovely with just cornish butter <3 <3

Tawny

Tawny Report 22 Apr 2020 23:21

Similar but no jam and cut across the top

Allan

Allan Report 22 Apr 2020 23:15

How about this, but without the jam in it?

The split had no jam on it just cream and icing. Mr Owl is half Scottish so maybe it’s different here. He grew up in a village of around 5000 people.

Is this the jam split?

Mr Owl said Splits were like bread rolls with cream and icing. Mivvi were ice cream hidden by ice lolly.

I remember Bakewell Tarts, but it's been a very long time since I last visited there. ;-)

Mr Owl is the same age as my kids. I think he is remembering the little milk lollies as the Mivvi and splits were fruit flavoured ice over icecream

Mr Owl was born in 1982 and remembers the Mivvi as well as three flavours of split.

You've reminded me of Patisserie Valery nameless, cake stands always heaving and you just helped yourself. It was either based on honesty or the staff had eagle eyes. I don't think I'd want a cake in that circumstance now :-0
