I'm wondering if people are panic buying eggs so they can 'bind' themselves up, in case they can't get enough loo paper? ;-)

We went to Tesco about lunchtime, no eggs and very little milk, very short of veg and no potatoes. Stopped at smaller Sainsburys and got milk, bananas and they had put out some loose new potatoes. Zilch eggs.

We got all we wanted at our small Tesco local store this morning. We went at 0915 and as we started looking they were gradually restocking the shelves, by the time we finished they had filled up quite a few shelves including meat, no eggs though. People seemed to be shopping responsibly but nearly everyone in there was over 60ish.

The staff in that shop are lovely, friendly and smiling and hard working.

we went to our local Waitrose first thing this morning to see a few empty shelfs no loo rolls or kitchen towels , and at first no carrots ,or spuds , or salad greens, until all the girls apart from the ones on the tills began to restock, so in the end we got all we wanted....apart from a nice hot coffee and cheese straw ...the coffee shop was shut ,the girls were needed on the floor to help restock. iris

tried to get my few bits on line todays as i am housebound but there are no delivery slots.
A friend is going to the supermarket so he has taken a list
fingers x
especially need food for my dog
why can't they set up a way for the vunerable to order bits and pieces
supermarkets need to co-ordinate deliveries, saves 3 different vans in a road at the same time but too complicated i expect

I did my regular weekly shop this morning and managed to get most of what I wanted. Plenty of fresh veg, fruit etc. meat and fish, bread, milk, cheese and eggs.. The shop was busier than usual but the things that had sold out were mostly stuff I don't buy.

The things that had sold out were pasta, baked beans, tinned meat and tinned fish (except tuna chunks, which are obviously unpopular!!) and there was a shortage of tinned fruit. Plenty of toilet rolls though.

Both The Coop and Tesco's were rationing people, and it seemed to be working.

bring back the stocks and put them to shame

maggiewinchester Report 17 Mar 2020 14:19

I think that those who are found to be stockpiling, and then selling stuff on at a profit should have it taken away - like the man in Tennessee, who bought 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer from local shops.
People do NOT need over 60 toilet rolls!

Dtr placed an online food order to arrive at weekend - she usually shops online when she is away for part or some of the week. They contacted her to say that they could only supply three items from her list!

rather like a jewish lady (I used to know),who's greeting was "good day vot can I do you for?"

maggiewinchester Report 16 Mar 2020 16:49

A poor shelf-filler in Sainsbury's today was asked by a lady where something was.
He went to the shelf - nothing left.
Then he very politely asked:
"Is there anything else I can show you that we've run out of?"

Local Tesco "online" have NO delivery slots until 3rd April :-(

Earliest "Click & Collect" slot 26 March :-)

Son has agreed to collect, and I can amend the order until the 25th so maybe the things "not available" today will be by them....or maybe not!

Daughter and I went shopping today and it took visits to 3 supermarkets before we could buy eggs.
Elder daughter had requested some and we managed to get a box of 6 for her and the same for us in Morrisons, but Aldi and Sainsbury's had none.
Poor shop staff were working flat out in each of the stores trying to restock shelves as fast as they could.

Yep in isinglass which we used on the farm during gluts of eggs.

Fantasy preservative which kept eggs fresh for months and months :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Mar 2020 15:33

I think eggs were kept in something called izonglass (I may have the wrong name but it was not just water) to keep them fresh. Bearing in mind they were usually really fresh as most people kept chickens.

But if you have been greedy and filled the fridge the bucket of water idea might help.

No need here to give it a try. :-)
