When I started my last job one of my colleagues who had been a physicist for many years warned me to run the tap for five or so minutes before I drank the water or filled the kettle because the pipes were still the ancient lead variety.

Everyone in that small community was in the same boat and none of us was overly worried. Personally, I felt secure enough by following that sensible instruction.

CV19 is a different kettle of fish, I feel. It can be hidden within the person standing next to you so your health can be compromised without you ever knowing it.

Not specifically BAOR related but I think worth saying.

We're seeing a lot of advice on COVID-19 but almost all of it is from anonymous sources. The following is specifically attributed to a named and respected scientist, Professor Graham Medley, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM.

He said in an interview with BBC Newsnight last night when asked if there was a "simple message" he could give the public.

His response was: "Most people have a fear of acquiring the virus, but I think a good way of doing it is to imagine that you do have the virus, and change your behaviour so that you're not transmitting it.

"Don't think about changing your behaviour so you won't get it. Think about changing your behaviour so you don't give it to somebody else."

In the interview, Prof Medley also discussed how herd immunity can help protect the population, and how vulnerable people can be protected.

If you listen to all the nonsense spouted at us you would not eat, drink or breath for fear of snuffing it. Lets face it if those things don't get you we will all die of shortage of breath eventually :-D

We have our supply filtered

We are lucky in that our water company does sample houses regularly (including ours) to maintain standards.

Having said that I only drink bottled water due to bowel disease - not a definitive instruction but advised, so I do :-D

What is wrong with normal TAP WATER.

Our local Superstore has reduced its price for bottled water by 10p.

We have been away in the UK there are cases in local towns in Lancashire we were careful .I know it can be fatal but just be advised to wash your hands just be sensible Take Care All Barbara

That is so sad Rose but I can see the logic in trying to keep the residents safe :-(

"My mil is 95, increasingly frail & has dementia. She lives in a care home. She looks forward to visits from sister in law & us, between us, 3 times a week. One of her grandchildren will visit once a month. Although She may not remember who they are, she enjoys the interaction they provide either with her grt grandchildren or the others family dog.

The home has closed its doors to friends, family & outside entertainers in an attempt to protect its residents.

Although we understand the reasoning, we feel sad that we may never have another chance to show that we ‘care’. She’ll feel that she’s been abandoned. The home has said that we can phone or Skype, which will be interesting as she can’t hear.

Although OH can be pragmatic, SiL will be in bits if she doesn’t have the chance to say ‘goodbye’. "

I don't go to crowded places very much and I am home most of the week anyway. I have been going potty stuck indoors for over 2 weeks with a shoulder injury :-|

I can't get out so I am not mixing so but fed up.

And I am in the unhealthy category for older people..

Lots of statistics, lots of references to "elderly", "underlying health conditions" ...( in reports/news etc)

Just maybe a gentle reminder that ( in possibly the one time Boris said something accurate, that I agreed with when he said "loved ones" ) each of those statistics is a real person, a "loved one" a father, mother, grandparent, brother, sister, child, to someone.

Being 'old' is not the same as being dispensable.

Be kind while you can. :-)
