Kense my grandmother was born in 1877 and aged 50 when she had my mother who was her 9th child naturally. The doctor warned her to expect anything, deformity, Down's syndrome etc. My mother was born with a problem hip as are many babies with much younger mothers are, but was treated and fine otherwise. My grandmother lost 1 child at the age of 3 and 2 of them didn't marry or have children, but the rest of her children provided her with 39 grandchildren. She had a hard life as her husband and 6 sons were all coal miners and all the washing was done in the old fashioned copper by hand and hand wringer. She had 1 water tap over the sink and all water was heated on the fire for the tin bath to come out when the men came home from the pit. (no showers at the pit in those days) She wouldn't have electricity put in and all cooking was all done on a big black leaded range. I know all this because I would stay with her at times and be sent to bed carrying a lighted candle up the winding stairs in pitch dark. She lived in her house looking after one of her sons who never married until she died aged 84. |

In the production of any baby, the father can be incidental whereas the mother is always fundamental. |
