From the GRO index, the only Harold G Jacques

JACQUES, HAROLD GEORGE mmn MIDDLEDITCH
GRO Reference: 1900 S Quarter in STROUD Volume 06A Page 371

so you are looking for a marriage Jacques to Middleditch before that date

There is only one before that date and in right location

Marriages Sep 1897 (>99%)
Jacques George William Stroud 6a 673
Middleditch Alice Fanny Stroud 6a 673

You should be able to find them on census 1901 & 1911

This is what I have Harold G Jacques (born june 1900) married Lillian Kate Franklin born (June 1901) in 1922. I have the names of all their children who were born in Gloucestershire. I would just like to go back another couple of generations on them both and have a couple of weeks.

What is 'it' that won't give the names of the parents?
Who was born before what?
BMD registrations go back to 1837, further requires parish records. Census available is every ten years from 1841 to 1911.

Jayne this is the link to the GRO index, https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

If you have problems using it, click on my name and send me a message with the names and DOB and I'll look for you.

Or you can put the details on here if you know your friend won't see them!

1911 census.

Jayne

Jayne Report 5 Sep 2019 15:22

I have the names of her grandparents, their dob, their date of marriage. I don't know how to find out who their parents where. It won't give the surname of the parents on an index as they were born before that came out x

Island

Island Report 5 Sep 2019 15:17

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

has mothers maiden names back to 1837 and no restriction on year range.

Island

Island Report 5 Sep 2019 15:06

Jayne, look them up on the 1911 census. If they are listed as 'son' and 'daughter' to 'head' that will likely be the fathers and presumably 'wife' will be the mothers.
Then look for marriages between the respective heads of house (forename and surname) and forename/s of 'wife' to check that one didn't take on those children from a former marriage.

How long have you got and how far are you hoping to go back? Unless the names are very unusual you could have quite a chore if you want the tree to be accurate.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 5 Sep 2019 12:57

From both surnames from the births on GRO you should be able to find a marriage and therefore first names of your friend's gt grandparents.

This is just normal genealogy what we've all done. :-D

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 5 Sep 2019 12:52

On 1911 census you look for the grandparents as children who'll be between 11 and 9.

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 5 Sep 2019 12:50

Find their births on GRO and it will give you mother's maiden name so you'll have both parents surname.

All you have to do is register as it's a free site.

I could but how can I sort out which they are as I don't know their parents names or where they where born x

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 5 Sep 2019 12:44

You should find them on the 1911 census living with their parents.

Good luck

I am tracing a friends family tree for her birthday as a surprise. I know her grandparents full names and when they where born (1900 and 1901) and married (1922) and most of their childrens name. The thing is I don't know who their parents where or where they were born. I have struck up a conversation with her and subtly asked her without giving the surprise away but she doesn't know. I can't ask her for a certificate because then she will know. Has anyone any suggestions please x
