Sugar/sweets/fruit drinks/chocolates etc all leave a sticky substance on the teeth which bacteria love and it's the bacteria that cause the problems. |

David, after eating fruit (especially acidic fruit) it is wise to rinse out your mouth rather than clean your teeth immediately - a tip I learned many years ago when I told my dentist that I would like to live to 100 with all my own teeth. So far so good. |

They do add a lot of sugar as we can get addicted to it yes, as with salt people are used to the taste. |

Anything high in carbs breaks down to sugar. Hold a piece of bread in your mouth and it'll go sweet. |

I played about with skulls and teeth when I was qualifying, getting to understand dentition and the surrounding bones/tissue. Some were plastic others were real. |

An old lady who had been out to India with her husband on some sort of contract once told me that her dentist had advised her that, should she not be in a position to clean her teeth at night, she should chew a milk of magnesia tablet before going to bed. |

That makes sense to me, Sharron, because by their very nature they react against acid. |
