It is all a numbers game which the Tories will lose, only more quickly if Boris wins, as he well might.

The number 1 consideration of most Tory MPs is how to hang onto their seats in face of a resurgent Farage. Boris is seen as easily the best bet. "The people" have never been a subject that overtaxes the Tory mind all the way back to the 2nd Lord Liverpool. Over a thousand summonses are due to be sent to the extinction protestors - at least they were not ridden down by horses. Other EU countries have preserved their steel works faced with exactly the same problems as Scunthorpe. Germany does not buy trains from Japan. France does not invite the Chinese Republic to run the trains in Paris.

Number 2 is that like his predecessor Bojo would not have a majority. It gets worse 'cos at least six Tory MPs are on record as being prepared to vote against the new PM in a Vote of No Confidence, maybe as many as 20. That could force a General Election in the autumn. The magic number is 4. Labour renegades such as Field and Hooey are wildly unlikely to bail out bojo.

Number 3 is that the UK is once more running down the clock for withdrawal with a deal. That might suit Bojo & Co but there is nothing close to a majority for it in parliament or the country.

Number 4 is that a mandate based on 300 Tory MPs and 120 000 crinklies in the sticks is not much of a mandate.

Number 5 is a real chance for Boris to well and truly bust the record for shortest term as PM. He may well be remembered as the person who drove in the remaining nails to the coffin of the Tory party.

right wing coup? Cressida Dick could go with it.
