Never mind Margaret only 15 cms due tomorrow :-D

I have bulbs trying to grow by the house right now so Spring is coming...

Sylvia yes awful crash I think the worse was 70 vehicles and no major injuries which is a miracle with all the trucks and tankers involved. Complete whiteouts.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 26 Feb 2019 16:57

I watched the ice breaking over the shore wall it was amazing as though it was alive ,,,,,,,nature at its best.

The bird bath frozen over over here is considered artic conditions,,,,,,,and any flurries of snow and whollop,,,,,the amber warnings go out,,,,,stay home, dont venture out, pile in mountains of food,,,,,,,,,,and then its announced,,,,

the country has come to a stand still,,,,,in 4/5 cms of snow. ;-)

Caroline, you'd better keep those 15 cms over on your side of the province! We're only supposed to get 1 cm tomorrow and another 1 on Thursday.
If we get those 15 cms you'll hear me screaming from my house to yours (400+ kms?)

Caroline

Caroline Report 27 Feb 2019 01:01

:-D :-D

West of us might get 20 odd cms but Windsor hardly anything.
Hope it's light snow.

Kay nothing comes to a standstill just slows down a bit, and a few steep hills no one can drive up :-)

MargaretM Report 27 Feb 2019 11:25

It's minus 25 this morning but no wind and no snow. Supposed to go up to a balmy minus 13 today.

Caroline

Caroline Report 27 Feb 2019 13:07

Snowing already as predicted.....only feels like minus 18...

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Feb 2019 18:04

cloudy, about -2C overnight.

Predicted to be the coldest February on record in the Lower Mainland.

I'm amazed at how long the snow on grass and gardens is lasting from the first snowfalls on Feb10-13. It's showing how cold the soil must be.

Caroline

Caroline Report 27 Feb 2019 21:27

Still snowing not due to stop until at least 7 tonight.....shovelled three times you'd never know getting much more than 15 cms :-)

Sylvia we were just saying yesterday we don't normally have solid ice all over the grass for more than a day or two it's been a couple of weeks. The schools haven't let the kids out onto the fields for weeks, never happens normally. The field ice is about 2 inch thick.

I just might send you all a ruler, and I don't mean the Queen, :-D :-D

This thread reminds me of schoolboys behind the cycle shed saying mines bigger than yours, although in this case it's mine's colder than yours ;-) :-D :-D :-D

Just joking, and to make you envious yesterday here in Bunbury the temp was supposed to be 28c but we hit 34c

Allan .........

:-P :-P :-P

Caroline ..........

it's a different winter all across the country I think. My daughter says they've had a weird winter in NS, not had as much snow but more rain. sleet, ice pellets, etc.

We have "possible flurries" in the forecast for tonight

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 27 Feb 2019 22:15

Caroline, we haven't had any snow yet. Are you keeping it all there? I hope so. I have to go out to rehearsal tonight. Hope I can get home safely.

Caroline

Caroline Report 27 Feb 2019 22:59

What none wow! Just starting to finish now.....you could have lied and said you'd had flurries.

Allan my snow pile is the biggest by far :-D

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 28 Feb 2019 02:18

Just got home safely, not a flake of snow here! However I'm sure that my piles of snow from the previous storms are much bigger than yours. I still take my life in my hands at every intersection, not being able to see over the piles of snow.

Caroline

Caroline Report 28 Feb 2019 13:16

What you in a go-cart?? :-D :-D

You need to call in the Army....it works :-)

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 28 Feb 2019 13:37

No, I don't drive around in a go-cart. Cheeky!
Actually I jut noticed a light dusting of snow on my car so I can't say we haven't had a flake.
Incidently I have 7 deer on my lawn right now.

Seems we've "only" had 128 cms of snow so far this winter....

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Mar 2019 19:55

I had to laugh to myself earlier yesterday evening.

I am as bad as anyone in saying Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are the "Banana Belt" of Canada.

We got the total records for this February on the TV news ................

10th snowiest February on record at the Airport ....... just over 31 cm. Record was over 60 cm back in 1949

Coldest ever February on record

That reminded me that our first winter here (1968) included the record cold ever recorded here.

It was -18C on Boxing Day 1968. Arctic fog was rising from Burrard Inlet as we crossed the Lions Gate Bridge.

It snowed heavily just before Christmas, side roads were not cleared. Another snowfall after Christmas used up all the money allotted by the city for snow clearing, so not even the major roads were cleared when there was a 3rd fall a few days later. The city did not start using money from other parts of the budget after the snow clearing budget had been used up until well into the 1970s.

I used to keep weather records at work and also had access to archaic records dating back to the 1920s. 100+ cm snow total between December and February was not unusual from at least the 1940s right through the 1970s, but that was "total", it didn't accumulate. Vancouver has always been a place where there would be a big dump that would melt away, followed by more snow weeks later.

Through that same period, the total precipitation for the year would be between 1250 and 1500+ mm. It's not been that high since then, thought there have been very wet years.

We bought our house in February 1972 when the garden and sun deck were under about 40-50 cm of snow so we could only look at them through the window.

There have been some heavy snow years since then, and everyone says "how unusual"!!!

Still better than lots of places, but not quite the Banana Belt!
