Sue....maybe the vote should have only been open to women to vote in seeing as ultimately it is their bodies affected....but anyway it was totally open and the results are in so now to implement everyones wishes.

Good! Now NI need to reform their legislation.

The result is loud & clear. The 'Irish Question' has been answered. The people have voted for a reform agenda - no more 'hanging in the air'.

Now the Irish Government has to draw up legislation & the electorate have to live with the decision. The Catholic Church's tight grip has been untied.

Interesting times.

There never has been any real push for BC to be independent from Canada.

What you might be thinking of (if you can think) is of Cascadia ................ which is a notion that BC, Washington, Oregon and northern California are more closely aligned than they are to their respective eastern capitals. This is being extended by the development of closer ties between these regions, suggestions that rapid transit south to north might be advantageous, closer connections between the IT centres in California, Seattle and Vancouver.

The idea usually raises its head more often when there is a great separation between the Federal government in Washington, DC and the states' populace. As the west coast states are more usually Democrat this usually happens when there are Republicans in power, especially ones who don't believe in certain beliefs, eg legalizing marijuana, abortion etc.

Don't be misled by what your cousin in Calgary might have told you .............. BC is happier being in Canada than politically aligned with the US states.

We have much in common, but even more that is NOT.

Doesn't mean a thing until all the votes are cast.....or am I wrong on that too :-)

So in plain language i can see why they would NOT want postal votes as they can be fiddled whereas it's less likely (though not impossible) to fiddle when you actually have to show up in person. In other words I can send in 50 postal votes but not likely to attend 50 stations.

I was not suggesting that there is a large Irish population in Canada - there are certainly a lot of people with Scots roots. What I was trying to point out was that with a federal state when one part of it breaks away then the whole edifice tends to come down. In the case of Canada and the Quebec referendum that did not happen of course.

The world wide population of people with Irish grandparents is often given at around the same as the current population of the island of Ireland.

I never assumed you thought anything about the Irish in Canada...though to be accurate there are a lot here no idea if more than the Scots or not really don't care either way.

The referendum did happen a couple of times and Quebec each time decided to stay....let's be honest here they huff and puff and know which side their bread is buttered so they stay....never would the rest of Canada join with the USA should Quebec "leave" not quite sure why you'd think that.
