Advice needed on the spelling of queuing too (not Ann who was C & Ping) lolol ;-)

It really doesn't matter where you shop, idiots are not filtered by ratio relating to the esteem in which you hold a particular chain on the ladder of 'quality'.

I dislike queuing, boring! I also don't use a self service checkout, the technology cannot cope with anything 'out of the norm', simple weight differences or price reductions invoke that awful electronic voice asking for an assistant.

Oh for the days of the village shop, complete with hissing gas lamps, cheese cut and wrapped for you, ham sliced, thinly or otherwise, as you liked it and a few chairs to sit down and have a gossip whilst waiting for your turn. Yes that was still happening in Great Chesterford in the 1970s. Not so much choice of course but I ate healthily lolol.

Even in Wales in the early 1990s it was the same enjoyable chat,shop, chat, shop, routine. Family businesses still being run profitably until that mega business Tesco bought a row of houses and flattened them to build a cold, heartless profit making outpost.

your interpretation of the common phrase "xxx is driving me nuts" is so unusual that poss. you should get some advice.

If there is one thing in modern life I cannot stand it is supermarket auto check out systems. It is the job of the supermarket to check out the stuff and put it in bags (which we now have to provide ourselves ) not mine. The second thing that drives me nuts is queing in spermarkets.

For those reasons and others ( squalling kids in Tesco, too many zimmerframes in JS ) I usually use Waitrose who have the common sense to pull staff off other tasks and put them on the checkout when busy. They also offer pre-scan if you like that and wil deliver stuff that you may want to eat as opposed to what looks like stuff rescued from the bins. We buy way more than half our food from markets and independent shops anyway and they def have no plans for automation.

In the US supermarkets bring yr bags out to the car and stow them in the trunk for you!

For those that care the attempts of Walmart, JS Sports, Tesco and others to do away with checkout staff are not going well.

OTOH the automation of some services and semi-skilled white collar work is going like a train (lit.). Given the high proportion of the UK work force with mortgage and family commitments the govt might do well to wonder what these people will be doing in ten years time.

Two hundred years ago there was a social and industrial revolution as cottage industry gave way to the mill. It is happening again this time with smart automation. If the Maybot and Gove flog the UK to US bigbiz it will happen a lot sooner and lend real meaning to the phrase "hard exit".
