I still like Maggie's version the best :-D :-D :-D

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Sep 2015 14:05

does anyone really not know what the meaning is?

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/bigot

A person who is intolerant towards those holding different opinions:
'don’t let a few small-minded bigots destroy the good image of the city'
'he was a fanatical bigot'

Origin

Late 16th century (denoting a superstitious religious hypocrite): from French, of unknown origin.

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Sep 2015 14:00

maggiewinchester that is certainly one definition of 'bigot' but I'm sure you realise it is not the one I had in mind ... we call this the 'fallacy of equivocation' :-)

'one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance'

'a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion'

'One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ'

views aren't bigoted? please maggiwinchester let us not play word games :-)

'If someone doesn't agree with your opinion, who is the bigot'

and here we have the 'straw man' fallacy ... no one said that a view is bigoted *because it differs from* someone else's ... but you seem to want to portray me as having said that ...

'Those who try to stifle differing opinions are the truest bigots.'

ah, and now an 'ad hominem' (apart from being simply a false statement). What an instructive lesson in how NOT to discuss something ...

why, you would almost think that someone here present wanted to stifle a 'differing opinion' ...

if you want to object to what someone has said or done, surely you can do that by portraying it in a straightforward manner.

You might as well have said 'Those who eat pancakes for breakfast are the truest bigots' for all the ... accuracy ... there was in your statement.

Bigot : A person who is intolerant to those holding different opinions
Views aren't bigoted, people may be, but we're all entitled to our opinions, and people should question them. It's called debate.
If someone doesn't agree with your opinion, who is the bigot - you or them? Who is 'right' when it comes to opinions?
Those who try to stifle differing opinions are the truest bigots.

frankly, however, if the site management decided it did not want to host the kind of bigoted views that were on display in that thread I would not disagree.

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Sep 2015 13:36

in case anyone comes along and doesn't know what the complaints are about, this is AnnCardiff's opening post that has now been deleted along with the thread:

this is just getting worse and those pictures of that dear little boy being carried from the water's edge is truly heartbreaking - both he, aged 3, and his five year old brother drowned, along with their mother. This just can't go on

this country is not full as people keep saying - I feel Hungary has behaved badly - after all, in 1956 this country, along with others, took thousands of Hungarian refugees and welcomed them with open arms - my family took in a 15 year old Hungarian girl

Seems to me that German is being over-generous to make up for their past, as they were responsible for millions of refugees

Australia is a massive country - why not charter a liner to help these poor people make a new life over there - I honestly don't know the answer, but we just can't sit back and do nothing

sits back and waits for the onslaught

And where is the community manager with her explanation?

Rambling

Rambling Report 8 Sep 2015 12:38

I don't think admin read reported posts any more they just delete. I base that on posts on the research boards which have been reported for having personal info on ( phone numbers, dob of living people), which could have been edited by the poster if GR had notified them to do so, they just get deleted instead...

It's my guess that it's just quicker to delete when they have so few ( any?) staff looking at reports and are apparently 'looking at how best to manage the boards'...

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 8 Sep 2015 12:37

Don't think so Bob. I think they just deleted the reported post without any consideration that the rest of the thread would disappear, regardless of the, at least 15-20 people who were discussing the subject sensibly and informatively. Personally I learnt a lot from it.

Well, talk about curtailment of free speech! GR may be concerned about the reporter's feelings - if the reporter gave a valid reason, but their swiftness in ensuring the majority are silenced for the sake of the 'few' (probably 1) smacks of paranoia or dictatorship :-| :-|
