Once upon a time.... there was a 'Joke thread' on GR..... or is that a figment of my imagination ?

I think maybe that this should be reinstated, so that all members on here could choose whether they read the contents or not.

Sometimes I have opened a post on General Chat with a heading that seemed to be a an ordinary every day subject but turned out to be a so called joke...... and on very many occasions something I have already seen posted on Facebook, where I haven't found it funny at all ........ 'Rude or otherwise!

I prefer to hear jokes spoken in social gatherings .... and I have had the delight of hearing many natural comedians over the years.

My favourite jokes are 'one liners' such as from Tim Vine .... never fails to make me laugh!

:-D :-D :-D

There was an "adult" joke thread, with a warning.

GR pulled it, because of complaints.

WARNING WARNING........... DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS POINT.

You WILL be offended.

Oh, I'm offended, I'll have to complain.

:-S :-S :-S :-S :-S :-S

Guinevere Report 30 Jul 2015 05:28

And a child would take notice of such a warning?

I don't think so.

It's not funny or clever to tell smutty jokes to children. And that's exactly what you do if you post one on here.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 30 Jul 2015 08:32

Children are not supposed to be using this site, although How do "you" stop them?

maybe by making the site so uninteresting they'll keep away?

as you say children don't 'DO' WARNINGS,

neither do many adults...........

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 30 Jul 2015 08:33

It is indeed Guinevere.

Occasionally, I am confused by those who step above the 'smutty' level and applaud, enjoy and reiterate grossly obscene jokes and yet are scandalised by some of the grossly obscene stories which we read about in the news. Thoughts of double standards spring to mind.

As I have said before, I am a huge fan of the clever and witty joke and have written many sketches and songs of that ilk for various groups.....but I draw the line at applauding and encouraging jokes which cross the boundaries of common decency. I do not feel the need to applaud a questionable joke simply to be accepted as part of a group.

Therefore, I am happy to be called a 'prude' or 'boring' or 'someone who should get a life' or maybe 'get out more'.

My friends would fall about in hysterical laughter if they heard anyone call me any of the above, but I have my standards and am happy to stick with them.

Thank you all for your input.

why would "children" come to this website to look for "smutty" or other jokes?

There are hundreds (at least) of joke websites.

I don't look at the smutty ones, but sometimes look for funny jokes.

My choice.

YOUR choice if you read any jokes posted here or anywhere else.

Children do not come on this site to look for Smutty jokes or any jokes.

They will be researching their family tree like all of us.

I must admit to not liking smutty or dirty jokes on the site and have reported one yonks ago because it didn't leave anything to the imagination.
So yes I am a Prude and proud of it.

As Cynthia and other people have said.this is a genealogy site and if anyone wants to put smutty/dirty jokes on thenn please put them on sites that are specially for such jokes.

what age do you consider are "children"? under 16's are not supposed to be here....

and I'm sure that under 16's are not as innocent as some on here would like to believe......

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 30 Jul 2015 09:32

I think they may be allowed on here at 13 Bob. But we know children are not innocent, we were all children once. What is wrong is letting them see that we, as adults, condone having smutty jokes on here and people finding them funny. (so..... if it is ok for the adults.......)

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 30 Jul 2015 09:36

The age limit is 13, Bob, not 16.

I am certainly no prude and can swear like a true trooper if I so wish to. I think I am the least worried about kids reading smutty jokes on Genes when they can freely visit porn sites. Better the written words than graphic pictures and videos.

Just my opinion.

LaGooner if you "swear like a true trooper" why don't you do so on here?

Must admit I swore like a trooper last night
when the baby chinchilla bit my finger

and I don't care who knows it ;-) ;-) ;-)

I don't know anybody who has never said a swear word in their lives

Give me a swearer to somebody
Who thinks they have superior morality or a Liar any day :-D :-D

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 30 Jul 2015 11:59

It was years ago, Bob, someone very young, maybe 10 or so, joined asking for help. A few people expressed some concerns about a child that age communicating with adults on the web and asked GC (as it was) for clarification and they said minimum age was 13.

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 30 Jul 2015 12:26

I remember the young lady joining up when she was underage but I thought that was a one-off........

don't you think that there should blocks on certain boards that people can access?

and I wonder just how many children DO frequent this site
and free members/paying members /lapsed members?

would it be available under the FOI?

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 30 Jul 2015 12:39

No idea, Bob. I know former members still read, though, because I've spoken to some.
