GEORGE NORTH
Wales Winger, George North, has been the subject of much discussion and controversy this week, following his being knocked UNCONSCIOUS not just once but TWICE, during the Wales v England match on Friday Night.
The first incident was when 22 year old George was accidentally kicked in the head by England's Dave Attwood. He was taken off the field to be assessed for concussion. The medical team were satisfied that George had passed the Sport's Concussion Protocol, and after 8 minutes he returned to the field.
But then there was a second incident that went UNNOTICED by the Wales Management team, medical staff, or the referee! :-0 :-|
THIS WAS WHEN GEORGE and WALES' HOOKER RICHARD HIBBARD CLASHED HEADS when tackling England's Full Back Mike Brown. He was out cold again, but came round and CARRIED ON!
The reason that they probably missed it was because of an incident that had happened a few seconds before, which led to Wales' ALEX CUTHBERT being Yellow Carded. George was on the floor while they were dealing with that!
HERE'S A YOUTUBE CLIP OF THAT SHOWS THE INCIDENT
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EHfD4oMN58
WE DIDN'T MISS IT ON RADIO JEM! Anyone who was following the match with us on the Rugby Thread will know that I was shouting at the telly for Warren Gatland to get George off! He was on another planet!
Personally, I think he should have stayed off after the first incident.
World Rugby asked the WRU for a full report on the assessment of North.
THE WALES MANAGEMENT ARE CONFIDENT THAT GEORGE WILL BE FIT TO PLAY v SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY.
They say he is not showing any ill-effects or showing any symptoms of concussion. He will be monitored closely as he returns to training.
Also concussed during this game was Wales' Tight-Head Prop, SAMSON LEE.
In future games, under WORLD RUGBY'S NEW CONCUSSION PROTOCOL, Wales' medics will have a LIVE VIDEO FEED in a bid to avoid missing such incidents.

Haven't they learnt anything since the incidents with Billy Beaumont?
Billy had to retire, I remember Willy Carson at the time (both captains at Question of Sport) explaining that jockeys with head injuries had to have at least 1 week off before they could compete again.
He should have a thorough medical and perhaps a brain scan before he plays again. :-(

Hi Pat :-)
Thank You for your input :-)
I totally agree with you.
We certainly do not want to see Rugby players (or any other Sportsmen come to that) lose their careers, or even worse :-0 through concussion related issues!
Concussion is a very serious condition and must be treated as such.
Talking of "A Question Of Sport", I don't always watch it, but I always enjoy it when I do. I used to watch it regularly when Bill Beaumont and Ian Botham were Captains, and of course EMLYN HUGHES:-( :-( I loved Emlyn Hughes!
Did you ever see the episode when he had Princess Anne on his team? Emlyn, who was a very tactile person, was warned that he mustn't touch her!
He kept forgetting, and would get all red faced with embarrassment! She was very funny, and threatened to hit him with her handbag!:-D :-D
So sad! Emlyn Hughes was such a lovely, lovely man!
Back to the George North issue... I have read up on George North's treatment and I shall be posting an Up-Date next :-)

GEORGE NORTH UPDATE
WRU's MEDICAL MANAGER, PRAV MATHEMA, has given an interview regarding George North, the Knock-Out incidents, and George's On-Going Treatment.
George North appeared to have been knocked unconscious twice, during the Wales v England opening Six-Nations game, last Friday Evening.
In the interview, Prav Mathema said, that since the incidents, George has been SYMPTOM FREE.
He was evaluated again today, and shows NO SIGN OF CONCUSSION and has started his RETURN TO PLAY PROTOCOL.
George will go through this process throughout the rest of the week, with a Step-By-Step increase in activity.
George will be evaluated by the medical team to see if he will be fit for selection at the weekend.
THE INCIDENTS and the MEDICAL TEAM RESPONSE
IN THE FIRST INCIDENT, George North was knocked unconscious, when England's Dave Attwood's boot accidentally hit George's head.
He was attended to on the field of play by the medical team. They were unsure whether or not George was concussed. In these instances the Head Injury Assessment Protocol (HIA) comes into play.
A player in this situation will be immediately substituted, temporarily, from the pitch. Then HIA Practioners can utilise up to 10 minutes for a more IN-DEPTH EVALUATION. This protocol is only for players where the medical team are NOT SURE of the diagnosis.
The above procedure is NOT to be followed where a player has been found to be concussed. In this instance, the player MUST ALWAYS BE REMOVED FROM THE FIELD. When a player is found to be concussed, the HIA will utilise the Independent matchday doctor AND THE NEUROSURGEON.
BACK TO GEORGE AND HIS SECOND INCIDENT.
Prav Mathema admitted that neither he, nor the other medical people, saw the incident at the time. He was being used elsewhere, and the other medic had not seen it either. He said that Pitch-side video replays were not available for him to see.
The WRU Mangement were too busy monitoring and dealing with the situation which led to Alex Cuthbert's Yellow Card, to notice George's mishap, said Prav.
The first Prav became aware of something not right, was when he returned to see George getting up from his knees. He attended to George and took some On-Pitch Evaluations.
George appeared to be "COMPLETELY LUCID and CONVERSING SPONTANEOUSLY with me" said Prav. He deemed George FIT to continue.
POST MATCH
Prav Mathema admitted that, after watching the video of the second incident, George did indeed lose consciousness momentarily, and should have gone off. He would then have had a SECONDARY MORE IN-DEPTH EVALUATION by Independent Matchday doctors.
He would then be assessed for Symptoms of concussion, such as Memory Loss, Balance problems etc.
AS A TEAM EVALUATING THE VIDEO EVIDENCE, IT WAS AGREED THERE WAS A CLEAR KNOCK-OUT.
George, although not exhibiting symptoms of concussion, WILL STILL BE TREATED AS THOUGH HE WERE CONCUSSED.
George will have a "gradual return to playing protocol" Step-By-Step, being assessed on a daily basis by doctors and a NEUROSURGEON. This is a globally recognised protocol.
WORLD RUGBY aka IRB (International Rugby Board)
The IRB asked the WRU for a Review Report on George North. Prav said that Reports are always done, after any injury,as a matter of course. An internal Interim Report was done and delivered to World Rugby the same day.
As reported in the on-line BBC SPORT- Wales Rugby Union:
"World Rugby - the sport's governing body - says North should not have played on after TV replays appeared to show him being knocked unconscious in the 61st minute.
However, it accepts the Wales team medical staff did not see the incident"
NO WALES SANCTIONS
Rugby's world governing body accepts the WRU's explanation over George North's head injury and will not impose sanctions.
Wales Medical Manager Prav Mathema said: " CONCUSSION IS A REALLY SERIOUS INJURY WHICH MUST BE ALWAYS TAKEN INCREDIBLY SERIOUSLY"
In future games, under WORLD RUGBY'S NEW CONCUSSION PROTOCOL, Wales' medics will have a LIVE VIDEO FEED in a bid to avoid missing such incidents.
RADIO JEM ;-)'s Rugby Union Followers wish George North a full and speedy recovery.
BUT DON'T COME BACK TOO SOON GEORGE! :-) :-) :-)
