It obviously takes time for a dictum about curricula to filter down to the chalk face including reading lists thus even Gove could not have changed the 13/14 or 14/15 exam and prob not 16/17.

As it is Nicky Morgan MP for Loughboro' has the job so I guess Ladybird will soon be back in kid's school bags. She is also a stout defender of faith and free schools.

TKAMB and the works of John Steinbeck are of course top notch stuff but ... the limited and iterative UK reading lists could do with quite a powerful kick up the backside and include a great deal more of the excellent modern stuff written in the UK addressing these issues.

Life in the grey gritty concrete which is the UK for most of the population has moved on since the Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Billy Liar, Kes and even Trainspotting and Bridget Jones. What on earth would a guy living in Poplar make of a reference to Radio City ?

Taking Errol's point if all the ISPs start using the same filter list ( def. Dave C objective ) then what action will be taken about the printed word whether delivered by Kindle, actual bookshop or Amazon? Will eBay become more a mine of difficult to find stuff than it already is? Will people applying for jobs end up defending their reading list ?

If To Kill A Mockingbird has been axed then my friend must be teaching the wrong syllabus.

I assure you, pupils are studying To Kill A Mockingbird. for June exams this year, as they are Of Mice And Men too.

English Literature as a GCSE subject has changed tremendously in recent years and the above titles are used by at least AQA (if not others) as part of exploring culture, assessed through external examination.

... but the underlying reasons are opposition to these and kindred works ( eg CITR ) from an ill assorted coalition of ukippers, ethnic associations in large British cities and the wooly cardy brigade. If Gove was as good as his word then "Trainspotting" would be no.1 on the schools reading list but it is not to be found even in Scotland. Similarly "Lord of the Flies" is slated for removal. The unlamented and departed Gove thought that far more attention to pre 1900 authors was needed.

Kindle don't mind publishing Trainspotting though.

What would yr top 10 GCSE/A level English language reads be for today's UK ? Would you restrict it to the UK only or allow world wide ?

Would you ban works that are too demanding of children's reading skills ( discriminatory ), novels that put any ethnic group at a disadvantage from Irish nuns to WASPs and everything in between ?

What would you do when a novel for young adults ends up digitally pulped by Sky's filters ?

The Bill Gates Trust (yeah, Microsoft) has engineered the US curriculum such that 70% of books read in schools must be "useful" non fiction.

Imagine a world in the near future.

You buy a book (yes, it is still just about possible if only you can find a bookshop that has not been converted into a cafe and taken over by Kindle-toting pseudo-intellectuals).

You read a couple of pages and then discover, to your horror and dismay, that the next few dozen have been ripped out.

Naturally, you go back to the purveyor of publications to complain.

But the owner of the literature emporium informs you that he has himself removed a number of pages on the instructions of a higher authority because they deem the pages to be unsuitable (NOT ILLEGAL) should a small child, of a literary persuasion, pick up said book.

In order to read, and thus enjoy, the book you have to purchase it and then ask for the removed pages (upon proof of age, I.D., Social Security number, address, eligibility etc) to be released.
