What a Game!
WINNERS OF THE KILLIK CUP 2014 ~~~ AUSTRALIA.
So what is The Killick Cup?
The Killik Cup is a Rugby Union competitive trophy awarded to Barbarians and their international competitors. Killik & Co are currently the sponsors for all Barbarians matches that takes place at the English rugby union home stadium Twickenham Stadium in London.
The cup was first contested in 2009 when the Barbarians played the All Blacks, where on that occasion, the Baa-Baas were the victors 25–18.
SO WHO ARE THE BARBARIANS?
Also known as The BAA-BAAHS, The Barbarians are a rugby club which brings together players from different clubs, by invitation.
They play a few matches each year to enjoy the camaraderie of the game and play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure of having to win.
Captain of today's Barbarian Line-Up was Former Scottish Captain- the lovely ALASTAIR KELLOCK.
The team had a very strong All Black contingent, with no less than 10 New Zealanders, including Colin Slade, Steven Luatua, Matt Todd, Tim Nanai Williams.
Also in the Baa-Baahs' team were England Prop- MATT STEVENS, South Africa's Juan de Jong, Argentine Tomas Cubelli.
It also included a great character and contributor to today's exciting match- Australia's NICK (The Honey Badger) CUMMINS, who the crowds seemed to adore, wearing wigs like his blonde curly mop :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
The AUSTRALIAN WALLABIES were captained today by MATT HODGSON. The clash against the Barbarians is an uncapped international, although will see playmakers Quade Cooper and Will Genia, wing Henry Speight and back-row Sean McMahon receive their first opportunities for Australia this year.
THE GAME: The Barbarians were proving the superior side for much of the first half. Towards, the end of the first half however, The Aussies got their act together and started playing the rugby that we all know that they can play.
It was an excellent first half, with the television commentator calling the match a "TOP RATE CURTAIN RAISER FOR THE AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL SEASON" At half time the score stood at 14-12 to Australia.
It looked a foregone conclusion that Australia would win, when they were leading 40-22 towards the end of the match.
BUT THE BAA-BAAHS WERE NOT DONE!
In the 77th minute Nick the Honey Badger Cummins goes over the line for a try, expertly set up by Nanai-Williams! The crowd erupts in cheers! It is converted by MARNITZ BOSHOFF.
The crowd is going wild, as Nick Cummins gets another run, off-loads to Boshoff for another TRY! The conversion takes the score to 36 the Baa-Baahs only 4 points behind the Wallabies.
The crowds are singing "Swing Low Sweet Chariots". Only a few minutes to go! Can The Baa-Baahs do it??
The clock goes red and Australia gains the ball. The Wallabies only need to kick the ball out of play, for the game to end in an Aussie victory!!! .......BUT NO!
THE AUSTRALIANS ARE SHOWING SPORTSMAN-LIKE QUALITIES AND PLAY ON!
The Barbarians regain the ball and fight on strongly. They are pushing, gaining ground. CAN THEY DO IT??!
Will Australia regret their decision to play on?
Australia manage to eventually get possession a few minutes into overtime, and this time the ball goes out of play!
It's all over!
But what a game! The Baa-Baahs may have lost the game, but to everyone involved in this game they certainly WERE NOT LOSERS!
MAN OF THE MATCH .... TEVITA KURIDRANI (Australia) WELL DONE ALL!
