OH and I used to stop at Jamaica Inn for a meal way back when we were first married in 1964 and OH was in the Fleet AirArm. Our parental home was near Oxford, so it was a LONG LONG way in those days from Penzance (no motorway)to visit family, seven hours there, and seven hours back!! OH was posted to Portland in the autumn of 1965, and by then we had our son on board, so we were glad to have a shorter journey, Portland was only 3-4hrs!!! The thought of doing any of that now fills me with horror, but we were young then and full of energy!!
Like others here, I found last nights episode very difficult to understand, it was SO mumbly and difficult to follow. We are going to try again tonight as we both love the book, and enjoyed visiting the place all those years ago.

Well,the BBC have been flooded with complaints and and they are "reviewing the sound" before tonight's episode :-)

Like many others I gave up after a few minutes of whispering. I had hoped to enjoy the series.

Watched first few minutes and swapped to One Born Any Minute. Not got many channels to choose from here but we are currently going up from a choice of 4 to a choice of 7.

Thank you Sheila so the location of the beach was in Du Maurier's head. I didn't think there was a beach like that nearby, Yes I have been to Jamaica Inn and also to Holywell Bay and seen her house near Fowey. That was an interesting piece, thanks again. :-)

Yes Von, where was that beach, that had me puzzled too because it looked more like a cove on the other coast of Cornwall, unless it was somewhere like Constantine. Although that is not walking distance from Bodmin.Port Isaac, Port Quin, lomng time since I was there, is there a sandy bay in that area? That is the trouble with making these programmes Lol We are all so picky these days. :-D

Torpid but maybe it will pick up .... Better than Crimson anyway.
I didn't have any problem with the Cornish accent - it is closer to English than, say, Taggart or what you hear on the bus on the Seven Sisters Rd..

A lot of modern tv drama has lighting setups that pretty well fail with standard definition TV eg the recent Peaky Blinders. Make sure you have the HD channel and the screen set to 1080 not 720. Similarly the sound tends to assume everybody has a sound bar and such.

I wish though I'd had the sub titles on earlier although there was only the one character whom I couldn't understand.
We were just about to turn them on when it finished :-S

Bodmin Moor always is a very isolated place especially when it's misty and in 1820 would have been pretty dark.
Where on the coast did the goods come in given that I don't think you can see the sea from the moor?

I haven't read the book so watched it with an open mind.

Liked the atmospheric interiors and the scenery, and everyone is realistically grubby, but it seemed to be 'style over substance'. The minimal (mumbled) dialogue and pouty looks weren't enough to move it forward despite a good cast. Some continuity errors too. Shame, as it looks like a good story. Perhaps I'll just read the book :-D

I agree with what others have said but only watched about 15 minutes - then fell asleep ! Looks like I didn't miss out on much though.......

Usually when the dialogue is hard to understand I turn on the subtitles :-

Dreadful.. Too dark, too much mumbling Persevered till the end but it may as well have been a silent movie as i didn't understand most of the dialogue! Shame I think the book is good.

I think it was always going to be dark and gloomy because that is how the story is. I had the subtitles on so the mumbling didn't bother me too much but I could also hear it quite well. It wasn't too bad I thought, it is not a bright happy book. I will probably continue to watch it although I may record it and watch both the two other parts together. I didn't think the accent was too bad for 'old' Cornish, it reminded me of how they spoke in Poldark, and I have heard some country people speak like it. :-)

Thank goodness I have not quite lost my hearing and ability to see as others have the same problems :-)

Didnt bother .hubby wanted to watch it so I went to bed and watched Long Lost Families . Had seen it before but still enjoyed it

Hasten to add had been up since before 6 am and done the daily run to to vets as well as the usual things that had to be done

Gave up after 10 minutes. A shame, I'd been looking forward to it.
