102 years ago, the RMS Titanic sank on her maiden voyage as she sailed from Southampton to New York City.

Over 1,500 people died as a result of a catalogue of errors, mistakes and ultimately, a chronic shortage of life boats, which have been well documented over the years.

After the ship sank, RMS Carpathia arrived at the scene and brought aboard
705 survivors.

There was worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and the regulatory and operational failures that had led to it.


Public inquiries in Britain and the United States led to major improvements in maritime safety.


One of their most important legacies was the establishment in 1914 of for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS),the International Convention
which still governs maritime safety today.

Many charities were set up to help the victims and their families.


On 29 April 1912, opera stars Enrico Caruso and Mary Garden and members
of the Metropolitan Opera raised $12,000 for victims of the disaster
by giving special concerts.

Versions of "Autumn" and "Nearer My God To Thee" were part of the program.


In Britain, relief funds were organised for the families of Titanic's lost crew members and one fund was still in operation as late as the 1960s.
