;-) Renes

And, lets forget, this was a Daily Mail article :-0

I wonder if she travelled to court on her Norfolk, issued for free, Bus pass !!

Errol....I eat beans on toast and I is minted ;-) (Not)

Kitty: 'I understand she thought she was making a point, but it became invalid as soon as she allowed a third party to pay off the debt first time around'

Too true :-)

KittytheLearnerCook

KittytheLearnerCook Report 19 Jul 2013 18:49

I have no sympathy or understanding of her actions at all.

My parents paid their council tax in full on state pensions, and my Nan did the same on her state pension.

I understand she thought she was making a point, but it became invalid as soon as she allowed a third party to pay off the debt first time around.

She needs to repay that kind person, pay off her current debt and start lobbying her local MP etc.

Oh and I sincerely apologise to everyone for tempting fate earlier on by saying what a lovely friendly thread this was :-(

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 19 Jul 2013 18:43

Gins I feel compelled to agree with you.

Understanding of, and sympathy for what?

At the end of the day she is refusing to pay a bill that she has to pay like the rest of us and can afford to pay.

She is not poor.

she is not destitute.

She is not "eating beans on toast" as one member put it (a somewhat derogatory phrase but hey ho) unless she chooses to.

Gee Report 19 Jul 2013 18:34

John: 'but that the lady in Norfolk deserves a little more understanding and sympathy than has been seen on this thread'

Why?

Some seniors think they can dodge anything, the line at the supermarket, the line for the post office counter, the taxes etc....

We are all equal, no matter of race, sex, ethnicity and AGE

While I 'would' give up my seat on a bus, for a senior (If I ever travelled by bus) I would not stand for them pushing in front of me in a line

I would also not be happy, paying their share of tax

very moral - imagine if we all followed her lead

Cynthia Report 19 Jul 2013 16:53

John, this is more of a moral issue than a financial one.

It's a matter of doing what is 'right' even though it goes against the grain.

It would be better if this lady paid what she owes (because she can afford to) and then fight for a fairer system.

I, too, would 'stand up and be counted' on certain issues - but not this one I'm afraid.

Andysmum Report 19 Jul 2013 16:44

I haven't read the news reports, only this thread, but if the lady in question has an NHS pension she presumably also has a bank account.

I don't understand why the Council don't arrest her bank account or get the arrears deducted at source, in instalments, by the NHS.

Like everyone else on this thread, I have very little sympathy for people who won't pay their dues. (Those who genuinely can't pay are a different matter.)

JohnLovesFletcherofMadeley so nice to come back from my shopping and find that you are falsely accusing not only me, but also eRRolSheep, of saying you have hijacked this thread, all I will say is that your accusations are beneath contempt - I will say no more because I have no intention of playing your silly games :-|

nameslessone Report 19 Jul 2013 15:18

There are plenty of people out there with must smaller reserves of money who would not dream of withholding payment of taxes.

I would be furious if I was one of them living in the same area - because she would be costing me money!

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Jul 2013 14:03

Does going to prison count as a holiday? If it doesn't, she'll still be expected to pay the council tax while she is 'away'.

Bearing in mind that the council could send in the Baliffs to recover the debt if they have a County Court judgement against her, OR make her bankrupt, she's getting off lightly by having a lein put on her home.

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 19 Jul 2013 13:58

John she has already said she would LIKE go to prison where she would get 3 good meals a day and no Council tax and that prison holds no fear for her......etc ..

vera2010

vera2010 Report 19 Jul 2013 13:46

I pay all my bills too Ann and have no where near what this lady has in savings but it does annoy me that I am paying the full council tax minus only 25% discount. I could get something like a tenner off but I gave up on page 4 of the online form.

This lady is unfortunately not likely to get much sympathy because she has such a wad of cash in the bank which seems to weaken her cause.

I suppose the system at the moment Is the best you will get. It allows for those on low incomes to pay less or none at all. There will unfortunately always be those who are on the margins and have to pay the full amount.

and since my lovely OH died nearly 11 years ago leaving me financially sound at that time, lack of interest in the building society and rising prices for everything under the sun has now left me in a precarious situation but I still pay all my bills
