There are plenty of people out there with must smaller reserves of money who would not dream of withholding payment of taxes.

I would be furious if I was one of them living in the same area - because she would be costing me money!

JohnLovesFletcherofMadeley so nice to come back from my shopping and find that you are falsely accusing not only me, but also eRRolSheep, of saying you have hijacked this thread, all I will say is that your accusations are beneath contempt - I will say no more because I have no intention of playing your silly games :-|

I haven't read the news reports, only this thread, but if the lady in question has an NHS pension she presumably also has a bank account.

I don't understand why the Council don't arrest her bank account or get the arrears deducted at source, in instalments, by the NHS.

Like everyone else on this thread, I have very little sympathy for people who won't pay their dues. (Those who genuinely can't pay are a different matter.)

John, this is more of a moral issue than a financial one.

It's a matter of doing what is 'right' even though it goes against the grain.

It would be better if this lady paid what she owes (because she can afford to) and then fight for a fairer system.

I, too, would 'stand up and be counted' on certain issues - but not this one I'm afraid.

very moral - imagine if we all followed her lead

Gee Report 19 Jul 2013 18:34

John: 'but that the lady in Norfolk deserves a little more understanding and sympathy than has been seen on this thread'

Why?

Some seniors think they can dodge anything, the line at the supermarket, the line for the post office counter, the taxes etc....

We are all equal, no matter of race, sex, ethnicity and AGE

While I 'would' give up my seat on a bus, for a senior (If I ever travelled by bus) I would not stand for them pushing in front of me in a line

I would also not be happy, paying their share of tax

Gins I feel compelled to agree with you.

Understanding of, and sympathy for what?

At the end of the day she is refusing to pay a bill that she has to pay like the rest of us and can afford to pay.

She is not poor.

she is not destitute.

She is not "eating beans on toast" as one member put it (a somewhat derogatory phrase but hey ho) unless she chooses to.

KittytheLearnerCook Report 19 Jul 2013 18:49

I have no sympathy or understanding of her actions at all.

My parents paid their council tax in full on state pensions, and my Nan did the same on her state pension.

I understand she thought she was making a point, but it became invalid as soon as she allowed a third party to pay off the debt first time around.

She needs to repay that kind person, pay off her current debt and start lobbying her local MP etc.

Oh and I sincerely apologise to everyone for tempting fate earlier on by saying what a lovely friendly thread this was :-(

Errol....I eat beans on toast and I is minted ;-) (Not)

But, checked first with Eastern Daily Press .....

Edit ...... forgot to say .... I hate baked beans ...
Love haricot beans but not cooked tomato ......

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 19 Jul 2013 19:32

Gins I wasn't knocking beans on toast at all - love it.

What I meant was that some people seem to mistakenly think that if you eat beans on toast you must be from a certain social standing if you see what I mean.

Mind you it is all relative.

If one could afford lamb chops at 12 quid for a couple or so then maybe one wouldn't want to eat baked beans.

Me? I am gonna have baked beans on toast for supper tonight.

With a caviar starter naturally.

Gee

Gee Report 19 Jul 2013 19:43

Of course Errol....I'm sorry, without tone and non verbal language....it doesn't always make sense!

Enjoy your 'fish' sh@t, I'll join you with the main course though :-D

Annx

Annx Report 19 Jul 2013 20:14

I can see a bit of both sides here. It is 'right' to pay your bills if you have the means to do so and I would always do that. Some have had the income and inheritance in their lives to have been financially comfortable and able to pay their bills later in life, but chose to 'live now and pay later', tomorrow never comes. It does seem unfair that they have had their cake and eat it as, when their money has gone, they get their bills paid for them, yet those that were frugal and have savings have to pay. That is just as morally wrong.
