Born in Edinburgh, grew up beside Saughton Prison in Edinburgh and came to live in the North East of England 50 years ago.

Born in Rosyth, brought up in Glencraig/Ballingry/Rosyth, also lived in Perth, Dundee, Iona, London, Dunfermline, and Edinburgh and moved to Bromley area of Kent in 1988 after my mother died.

Who is Scottish born, and where do you live now?

I've never come across a deep-fried Mars bar either, but then again I rarely go to a chip shop.
I was also in the No camp, but am now undecided. I think we all need more information, accurate information that is, not the guff spouted by both Yes and No camps.
By the way RolloTheRed, it's Fort George - and just a mile away from here.
I grew up on Skye long before the bridge was even thought of.
I agree, you can buy all malts in London, but you will find they are made in Scotland. Naturally, we export them - we're not stupid! The heather is on the hillsides, not growing from our ears!
However, I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of my country. Generally, we give a warm welcome to people, whether they are working here or on holiday.
I trust you have all the details of the children born at the Fort. If not, please let me know the names and I'll see what I can do.

I have lived in Scotland all my life and I have yet to see a deep fried Mars bar let alone taste one.
I don't doubt that they are on sale in a chippy somewhere in the country, but as yet I've never come across one.
As for the referendum on independence?....I am, and always will be in the NO camp.

Our family have a long association with Scotland that is why I know it is boring.
I do like malt whisky but fortunately even rare malts can be found in London (as anything else worth drinking ).

I have sailed to the Shetlands which are wonderful, but not Scotland except to Herr Salmond.

I have been to Skye (before the bridge) and for that matter the outer Hebrides ( where on some islands you cannot get a malt on a Sunday, heaven knows what they do in the winter ) and Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Thurso, Hawick, Berwick ( sort of in England I know), Portpatrick and a lot of other places mainly to earn a buck not enjoy the view still less deep fried mussels, Mars bars and jam sandwiches.

Given that there is an excellent air services to Scotland and that it is no longer possible to get a decent meal on either east or west coast routes I don't know why Scots want HS2 extend northwards. Why?

I prefer the view out of the window in Dulwich where there are red buses taxis and civilisation to any crag or glenn.

I have modern rellies in (of all places) Dundee, recently retired from the Uni.

Going back a bit we had a small castle in the borders (English side) which the Scots burned down, raped the gels, reived the cattle and generally did their customary bit to make themselves popular. The ruin is still there.

Another female rellie not oh so long ago married one of the Cumberland bunch, you know Culloden and all that.

Some of my gt grandmother's siblings were born at Fort St George in Inverness where my ancestor was doing his bit for the Gunners (Royal Artillery).

Another female married into an aristocratic Scottish family, still extant.

So there you go, a Scottish tanglewood tail.
Today there are more living people with Scottish names in England than in Scotland ( an even more in Canada and NZ ).

I think it is Mr Johnson who said
"The man who is tired of London is tired of life"
and
"The finest prospect that a Scot ever beholds is the high road to London".
Though for some the finest prospect they ever behold is the plain in Spain.

I wonder what would happen if the English were allowed to have a vote on giving them independence from the Union ? I have seen polls which would see about 70% voting yes thus making Scotland both independent from England and England (nopt Scotland) having to reapply for EU membership.Would they bother?

Mr Salmond would be ecstatic and so would the Tory back bench. I am not so sure he would be quite as delighted to be getting the bill for Ulster and Wales though.

In the 1970's I had a couple of caravan holidays near Nairn, used to go to the bingo hall there, half way through the session they had a break and every one nipped into the bar next door, it was a frighting site to see the local women downing their whisky, woe betide any stranger who shouted House - if looks could kill :-D :-D :-D

LadyScozz many unopened bottles of malt whisky's distilled from 1950 to 1970 are now worth quite a few bob - they are collectors items now ;-)

The one I had was probably half that size, and didn't cost an arm & two legs! Must be over 30 years ago I had that one.

Edit: Had to add this bit......... at our golf club, when a member gets a Hole in One, the club puts on a bottle of Scotch, not for the player to take home, but to give a nippy sweetie to other players......... ofcourse I'm not a member of the men's golf club, but if I'm there and one of the men gets a hio, I always get a nip! They know I'm Scottish born; I'm sure they like watching me drink it neat!

I had a nice collection of various malt whisky, about 36 bottles most were presents, I kept them in a large display unit but when I moved into sheltered housing no room for unit as it was to big, so gave all my whisky away to a friend keeping only one bottle of Laphroaig - sad sad day that was :-(

AnninGlos - my preference is Laphroaig but I was never known to refuse a Talisker or two or three ;-)

Just looked in my drinks cupboard... there's unopened bottles each of: Laphroaig, Black Bottle and Gold Label.
Ther's another called Black Bottle that I opened recently ( had in in my coffee) and until a few weeks ago there was... also a bottle of Talisker.
We gave it to someone celebrating a birthday.but who we knew would enjoy it

OH doesn't drink very much but gets gifted with whisky every year from a distillery that he does some work for.

There are more here - but prices are not for the faint-hearted :-0

Years and years ago I bought a bottle of Scotch, name of Glen Grant, in a small squat square bottle. It was beautiful! And I've never seen a bottle since, tried in MANY countries!

I don't mean Grant's.

Has anyone seen it?

Merlin before my health meant strict diet restriction - I was partial to a nice Aberdeen Angus T-Bone Steak and for Sunday Lunch a nice roasted Aberdeen Angus Rib of Beef - and of course a good few gills of Laphroaig ;-)
