Don't get me wrong, the Edinburgh Festival, the Military Tattoo, and the Fringe is good for Edinburgh and the Scottish economy and it only disrupts things for a few weeks, well worth the disruption :-)

On the subject of pub crawls, done my share of them in my younger days, my most memorable, well what I can remember of them, were from Holyrood Palace to the Castle esplanade, from Elm Row down Leith Walk to the bottom of Constitution Street in Leith, and from the St Andrews Square end of Rose Street to the Charlotte Square end of Rose Street - I think I could do them quicker these days as I have a mobility scooter :-D :-D :-D

OFITG,
We had a great time last year at the Fringe .
We went into Edinbutgh quite a few times for some of the Comedy stuff.
The highlight for us was Danny Bhoy.
I was looking forward to some of this years events and I can't find anyone in the programme that I would like to see :-( :-(

Danny Bhoy is not very well known in Scotland.. but. he does seem to be popular with in Australia and Canada though??

There is a brill sketch somewhere about a pub crawl in Edinburgh.... his observations on groups of girls had me crying with laughter
:-D :-D

Edit:
Found it but it's only a small bit of the sketch

LOL.
Glasgow Hokey Cokey is quite a theme!
I don't remember those guys but they are quite fun too.

That's a very popular spot for buskers, and it was filmed from outside the shop that I mentioned,
(although the shop wasn't there in 2008)

That whole area of Buchanan St that you can see on the left side has been redeveloped since 2008 and has only recently been re opened as larger retail units.
I was there on Monday of last week , buskers that I remember were a skiffle band , a puppeteer , a child violinist and... a teenage vocalist with a guitar.

:-D :-D

OH & I went to the Edinburgh Tattoo some years ago (around 2000), we really enjoyed it, except for the size of the seats! We went with my cousin and her OH, he and my OH are both big boys, they had to sit sideways!

Nolls ~ I used to live in Adelaide. There was a Tattoo at Adelaide oval many years ago, before they thought about having them at Glenelg. I went to the Adelaide one with my Mum, it was a very hot night, we felt so sorry for all the guys in their heavy kilts & bearskins, they must have been melting.

I'm with you on the whisky OFIG! I shudder when I hear people order "a Scotch & Coke" :-( I might have a wee drap of water with it, or one small piece of ice, definitely not cola, soda water or ginger ale! Sacrilege!!

:-D

And the things some tourists put in their whisky would make Rabbie Burns sit up in his grave - ginger ale; lemonade; cola; and water :-(

Whenever someone asks me if I want water with my Scotch, I say I'm thirsty, not dirty ;-)

OFTG I know what you mean ...Tourists ... bah! I am not very good at walking and have to sit down every few yards when in town in H/g. OK in winter but can you get a seat in summer Oh No ! :-D :-D

'Emma' Report 27 Jul 2013 11:47

Daughter off to the Edinburgh Tattoo some time soon,
never been myself but watch on TV. I don't think its as
good as it was years ago. OFiTG had to smile re getting
a drink in your pubs :-) you should make up for lost time
when everyone has gone home.

The period covering the Edinburgh Festival, the Military Tattoo, and the Fringe, was never popular with me as it made it nigh impossible to get a drink in any of my favourite pubs in and around the Royal Mile, the Grassmarket, and the Cowgate :-(

Glasgow Lass the Tattoo is great it's the atmosphere that helps been to the first 21 my Dad used to work in the dept and got half price seats for the dress rehearsal then as the years went on we went with our family. Years ago we went to the First (don't know if they have done it since) Adelade Tattoo which was held on/near the beach and done in conjunction with Edinburgh it started off with an Aborigine playing the didgeridoo and an old fashioned Scot playing the pipes together it was really good only difference the night wasn't dark and it was warm :-D Tell you what though it was a lot cheaper when we went to Edin than it is now had a fit recently to see how much they charge ..wouldn't like to take a family - inflation :-(
Would love to see the Hairy Men miss that sort of thing ..we get operetta down here not the same haha!

Lol.
Dau No2 had a part time job in an electrical/pc store in Argyle St.
She was there for about 3 years
She always worked full time at Christmas and holidays but the redident busker who plays outside thinks he's Hank Marvin.
He has an electric guitar and plays the same stuff all day long.( yes he's still there)
She came home absolutely demented with his rendition of "Apache".

The shop eventually closed down and moved up to Sauchiehall St, where the new resident buskers were the 2 lads in kilts ...Hokey Cokey
LOLOLOL

When our Oz rellies came to stay with us, we spent a day in Stirling and they BOUGHT a set of bagpipes !
