Yes Polly, I remember it well.

Started off young at North Merchiston Boys Club and as I got older the Palais then more sophisticated, the Cavendish. Office dances were held in The George Hotel, The Grosvenor and the Caledonian Hotel. Happy days.

Just thinking, I might even have known your Mother!!!

That old ! Did you know the Cavendish in Edinburgh ? my Mum used to do her Scottish Country Dancing there and also in Princes Street Gardens in the Summer..Pre White Heather Club..19 late 40's and 50's....I remember getting off the tram from school and waiting in the gardens for her....

Sean Connery used to go to the Palais de Danse in Fountainbridge the same time as I did.
We are the same age - YES that old!!

Here's something REALLY trivial........

My aunt's second husband's mother lived in Edinburgh....... her milkman (waaaay back) was Sean Connery.

Robert - Sean Connery territory indeed, when I bought my flat there the builder who did the refurbishment work to convert the building on the corner of Grove Street and Fountainbridge into flats mentioned to me that Sean Connery had lived in the original buildings.


Polly - I visited Mary King's Close just after it was re-opened to the masses in 2003 and I went to the Mary King Ghost Fest in 2006 - quite an interesting and amusing experience - but spooky.

I remember 'notes ' Nolls......Very good,good,fair and indiferent and no note..I still have one of each !! In My Missal..I lived on pilton at the time and crossed Edinburgh.........on my own....aged five....bus to the West End then a policemen escorted the Convent Girls on to the tram !!!Wouldn't happen today...

I go to Edinburgh fairly often.

For anyone who has never visited this hidden street it would have been one of those tall tenement built streets mentioned in the article.
Rather than demolish it competely, the top portions only were cut away, and the lower parts were then used as the foundations of the Royal Exchange which was then built on top.

This is now a visitor attraction, accessed by a steep stairwell from an adoining building.
Once down there, you can see just how closely they were built to each other.
Only a few feet apart and on a very steep slope.
I would guess that the further down the hill, the higher the buildings would have been
I cannot imagine that the sun ever reached these alleyways!

Anyone from Currie or Balerno? Lived in both places after we got married Balerno being the last place we lived in before we went down South. What a surprise when we were in Perth Aus during Scottish week , we had gone into a very small cafe and got talking , couple at next table called over to us after hearing Balerno mentioned ... "We're from there" they said...what a surprise anyway we got talking and then the only other couple in the shop came up to us before leaving and said>>> "So are we" ........Well small world ...I might add we then went on a bus and asked the person in front where we were .. guess where she came from? no not Balerno but Edin. :-D

I worked in Edinburgh from 1962 until 1969, travelled everyday by train from Inverkeithing in Fife, moved to Edinburgh in 1979, first lived in Grove Street on corner of Fountainbridge then moved to Lennox Street in the New Town, always loved Edinburgh :-)

Born in Edinburgh's New Town but brought up beside Saughton Prison, I have experienced a wide range of Edinburgh life.

Edinburgh's grand New Town is regarded by many to be the physical evidence of the Scottish Enlightenment but its very existence is owed to a feature of the city which is frequently overlooked.

Edinburgh in the 1700s was a very different city to the one we know today. The city boundary was restricted to the dramatic crag and tail feature which swept eastwards from the castle. Up to 35,000 people inhabited a space under a mile long making Scotland’s capital one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world at that time. The overcrowded population were crammed into crumbling tenements, many of them up to fourteen storeys high in order to make the most of the limited space.

Edinburgh’s nobility were often forced to accept the unthinkable and share dwellings with the lower classes. Change was not just desired, it was deemed an absolute necessity if the city was ever to move forward.
