Hi Barbra, from Bonnie Gallowa'. I know your part of the Country as I did my National Service in the RAF at Stranraer.

Potty Report 13 Jul 2013 11:33

We did the same, Barbra, moving to D&G 9 years ago. Couldn't agree more about the area, one of the few places where you don't worry about locking your door when you go to the shop and the midges aren't really too bad!

This might help with the midgies ~

Nolls from Harrogate Report 13 Jul 2013 12:41

Lady S can't open your thread ... I read a few years ago that when they were building the Skye bridge the found that Av** cream/perfume? kept the midgies away and all the labourers were issued with some. They might have been grubby and sweaty but by golly they smelt good :-D :-D

Our Avon lady does a roaring trade in it!

We went to the West coast one year and I took
along S/S from Avon never bitten once.

Any lover of Aberdeen Rowies out there?

Emma :-)

OneFootInTheGrave Report 13 Jul 2013 14:34

When my mum's aunt who lived in Aberdeen would bring a bag of Aitkens rowies when she visited us :-)

Robert

Robert Report 13 Jul 2013 14:36

Like Aberdeen Rowies but found them a bit greasy.

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 13 Jul 2013 14:43

OFITG it has to be Aitkens.
Robert depends where you get them from some
can be very greasy.

Emma :-)

OneFootInTheGrave Report 13 Jul 2013 14:45

Even greasier with a slice of Lorne Sausage in them, better still with some fresh salted butter and a thick slice of Scottish Red Cheddar - delicious ;-)

Ah Yes that's what they're called Aberdeen Rowies not always greasy But delicious heated and loads of real butter . No wonder Scots have very high heart problems .... but we like em. Got them once years ago down here down South but not a patch on the real thing didn't last long in the shop either may have been M&*
What about tablet??? Just found a recipe for microwave tablet takes 12 mins and just as good ;-)

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 13 Jul 2013 15:15

Used to make tablet when working week-ends to
sell when hospital visitors came to see their family.
All for Ward funds, Clootie Dumpling went down a treat
as well. :-)

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 13 Jul 2013 15:23

I loved tablet - my mum used to make it, if memory serves me right she used condensed milk, I used to watch her and scoff the bits from the saucer she used to test it on to see if it was ready and I can also remember my brother and I fighting over who got to lick the bowl when she made a clootie dumpling - delicious fried ;-)

'Emma' Report 13 Jul 2013 15:27

Some of my favourites are, Haggis; Home made Scotch Broth; Lorne Sausage; Potted Meat; Ayrshire Bacon; Scotch Pies; Steak Bridies; Mature Scottish Red Cheddar; Clootie Dumpling; Short Bread; Dundee Cake; Smokies; Scottish Morning Rolls; Plain Bread; and of course a decent malt whisky- I wonder if any of these contributed to my health today :-(

'Emma' Report 13 Jul 2013 15:54

All sound good to me OFITG, my old mum used to say
'What's coming for you won't go past you'
Been years since I had Potted Heid as we called it here. :-D

George Report 13 Jul 2013 18:46

I will say one thing for Scotland, had the best fish ever at a place called Anstruther .

Up there in Fife with Foggs as he was researching his ancestors, cracking place.
didn't think much of Edinburgh or Aberdeen, would have been a lot nicer if they were to spend some money and clean the buildings, but the countryside was cracking. :-D

George :-)

'Emma' Report 13 Jul 2013 19:01

I agree George, but to get our council here to spend
money to clean the granite would take a miracle.
Even HRH mentioned it a few years ago but nothing
was done.
