The Meadows is a nice area Nolls. Grandson has moved from Marchmont to Sciennes Road for his final year at university.

Mau that takes me back my best friend when we were kids lived in Sciennes now that was a long time ago my goodness this thread has brought lots of memories back Broughton road was near where I lived too then when I got married our first house was near Saughton Prison ....even saw a prisoner escape one time! :-D

My parents brought the family to Oz in 1963.

My first visit to Scotland as an adult was in 1988, with OH.

I told him he might have a problem understanding people..... he said it wouldn't be a problem, as he understood my Mother, and he watched Taggart!

A few hours after we arrived we were in the local pub with my cousins....... and OH was staring at me, shaking his head. Why? He couldn't understand me, because I was talking just like my cousins.

My first house in Edinburgh was on the corner of Grove Street/Fountainbridge right opposite the brewery, the smell from the brewery at certain times of the day was enough to put you off beer for life, and after a night out in town we would stop at the bakers in Morrison Street - at that time of the morning the shop was closed but you could buy Steak Bridies and Scotch Pies straight from the oven at a door up the side of the shop - fond memories ;-)

Scozz I think OH & I have our Edin. accent but we have friends down here from Glasgow and their accent is very broad well only half an hour with them and I find I am talking like they are hubby gets mad at me "here we go again thinks she's from Glasgow" but it is the easiest accent to mimic can't do the Yorkshire one at all ;-)

We might have been neighbours at Saughton !!!

When the sirens blew when a prisoner escaped, my Mother used to panic. She didn't realise that they would get as far away from the Prison as possible.
I remember on my way to school seeing the notice on the Prison door saying that a prisoner had had the death sentence carried out.

I used to go to school at the top of Viewforth where there was a fusion of smells from the Rubber Mill and the Brewery.

Robert one of my best friends who I used to visit regularly, God rest his soul, lived in Viewforth and Boroughmuir School was across the road from where he lived, noisy lot during breaks and when school came out ;-)

When I went to Boroughmuir (during the war) ,we were very well behaved.

My OH went to Boroughmuir just after the war left about 1954 but his older brother & sister went there during the war ....small world!

I was born in England - but started school in Scotland - Lossiemouth to be precise, then we moved to Arbroath, then back to Lossie, before moving to Cornwall.
As an adult I lived in Shetland, Irvine, and Dumfries and Galloway.
What I really miss is decent 'square' sausage!!!

My aunt gave me this recipe ~ not perfect, but it's close!

1 lb ground beef
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
3/4 cup cracker crumbs (eg salada)

Mix all together, shape into block. Wrap in wax paper. Chill. Slice, then fry or grill.

maggiewinchester I used to go on holiday to Arbroath with my Mum & Dad and always remember eating fresh Arbroath Smokies down at the harbour straight from the smoke house - delicious :-)

As to a decent square' sausage (Lorne Sausage) you can make using recipe from LadyScozz or you can be lazy if you have an Iceland Frozen Food Shop near you as my local Iceland have the nearest that I have found down here to what you get in Scotland, their sliced square sausage is not quite as spicey but very close ;-)

I met my wife at the Palais in Fountainbridge.

Spent many a night at the Palais de Dance and also played bingo there after it became a bingo hall, not sure what it is now, I know that there was an proposal to build a casino on the site, but I think that got turned down.

Robert Oh's brother would have left about 1944 sister 1949 and youngest sister 1958 a family affair! Good school though. I went to Craiglockhart Convent. Think some of our paths must have crossed at some point (that wasn't you falling over in Princes Street in 1950 was it :-D)

OFTG The Palais! had great times there and if we wanted to be a wee bit posher the Cavendish at Tollcross that's where I met OH!! , think there was somewhere else we used to go to but can't remember.
Love Arbroath Smokies in fact neighbours who comes from Arbroath brought us a couple back recently when they went up on holiday...under the grill with a knob of butter, beautiful :-D

Palais sometimes and then the Cavendish, but in my younger days dances at North Merchiston Boys Club on Saturday Nights.

I see you are researching Robertson. My wife is a Robertson from Stockbridge/Comely Bank.

The 3 Popular Dance halls were the Palais, The Cavendish and the Plaza.

Sean Connery (who is the same age as I am) was a regular at the Palais when we went and lived at that time where OFiTG lived!!!

Yes Robert the Plaza that's it ... was always a bit quieter so didn't go there much often went to Glasgow Alambra with friend who lived in Paisley we had to get the last bus home from Glasgow to Paisley oh dear running down Sauchiehall Street at 11pm in 6inch heels :-D Now I didn't know Sean C. went to the Palais ...... D*m and to think I let him slip through my fingers :-S
My Robertson's so far come from Perthshire though OH's side has some from E.Lothian and nothing would surprise me if I find a link to them...I have just found a link to my Wisharts and OH's side we have the same gt x something g/parents ..How awful :-D
