A wee story ~

In parts of Scotland it was considered unlucky for an outsider to call a child by its name until it was christened; even at the ceremony, many preferred not to say the name, and they would hand the clergyman a piece of paper with the name written on it.

One day a couple brought their infant daughter to the church.

The minister asked what name would be given to the child

The father muttered something, sounded like "Spindoana"

"That's an unusual name" said the minister

"I baptise thee Spindoana"

"NAW, NAW" said the father. "Her name's no Spindoana!! It's pinned oan her shawl!"

:-D

Should I also post this on a separate thread? :-)

ty OFIG :-D

I posted it on General Chat, thought it might get a laugh or two.

I think 12 people viewed it, but nobody commented.

Maybe they didn't understand the language?? :-D

I got the story from a book ~ Scottish Customs from the Cradle to The Grave, by Margaret Bennett.

My OH had nae bother either....... and he's Aussie born. He's lived with me long enough to understand a wee bit!

He tries his best to speak "Scottish", doesn't do a bad job, but he's got some work to do, especially on his.... "pilly willy" (not being rude! pmsl)

LOL had me going there for a minute Scozz,
he is doing well understanding us Scots as
so many dialects and sometimes I have to listen
really close myself when listening to others as we
all tend to speak really quickly.

GG - OH's first visit to Scotland was in 1988.

I told him he might have trouble understanding people, but he said he'd be fine because he understood my Mum, and he watched Taggart.

Oh aye.

Day 1 ~ We stopped in Dumfries to fill up with petrol. Wee man in a bunnet came out, nodded at us......... OH said "can you fill the car up please"... wee man nodded again. At that stage I got out of the car, in case a translator was required..........

Car filled up...... wee man said "onyhinelseyerwantin?"

OH just looked at him......... "pardon?"

wee man said "onyhinelseyerwantin, man?"

I said "No, we're fine thanks"........ and the wee man stumbled off, looking over his shoulder at OH...... like OH was a daftie.

OH looked at me.... and said "What the HELL did he say?"

So I said "onyhinelseyerwantin......... man?"

:-D

Being English I sometimes find the conversations in our local shop unintelligible! Mind you, that could be due to slight deafness on my part!

Our local History Group has recently published a dictionary of Scots words used locally, which I shall have to study so I can catch up with the latest gossip (sorry, news).
