Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 15 Jun 2013 17:26

Errol I'm sure they do and I do think there should be some cash ones round.
John I'd get lost and then I Would need another phone :-D

A quick google suggests 'most' people, a broad selection from various sites, newspapers etc refer to 'Paddy's wigwam' affectionately. It may not be accurate to describe it thus, but I don't think it was intended as insulting.

From the ferry you can see both Cathedrals in one view, I found that representative of a city which has welcomed and sustained many nationalities and religions and developed it's humour accordingly.

Nolls. You have the answer. If you need to phone home and you are in the middle of nowhere, you simply make your way to Errol's home (is Cheshire close to Harrogate?) and put your cash in box - simple. As long as his box has not been vandalised :-0 :-0

Nolls I have just been out to check my nearest phone box and it takes cash. I was in a town the other day and used one that also accepted cash so I think they are still pretty common.

John - no diversionary tactics whatsoever and I have already admitted that I mentioned the wrong cathedral but my comments still stand and I know many people who publicly refer to Paddy's Wigwum

Mersey Report 15 Jun 2013 16:32

John is it dead and buried because maybe I have questioned you and you are wrong?????

True John and there are some still here in H/g not the old fashioned ones though . Can you still buy phone cards??? I would probably still forget to buy them . I should imagine Errol there won't be that many left for cash ....Now here's a big problem tell me what I can do if I need to phone home when I'm so forgetful...on other hand don't bother by the time I got there I would have forgotten what I was phoning about..............don't worry I'm rambling as usual ;-)

Mersey. No. I think I made my point very clearly on other thread and it is dead and buried as far as I am concerned.

Errol. If you used such an expression 20 years ago or amongst friends, it would probably be acceptable. Yes, we know Liverpudlians have a great sense of humour.

But at the workplace and on a public site such as this is is unacceptable and I suspect illegal. People now get sacked for saying what appear to many to be funny insults.

Anyway, the architect of that Cathedral was not the one who invented the red phone box. So back to phone boxes after your diversionary tactics.

Every phone box I have used in recent times had a cash facility

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Jun 2013 16:12

Good idea, Nolls. But would it be cost effective. So many seem to want to vandalise things. For the fun of it, or for small financial gain.

Examples:

Remembrance benches
Telephone boxes
Bus shelters
Gardens of remembrance
Trees
Lead flashing off roofs of churches and schools
Lifts
Stairwells
Public parks
Kerbstones
Underpasses

99% want these amenities. For some reason, 1% spoil it for the majority. You could never have a cash facility in a phone box, and how many who don't have an emergency mobile phone will have the credit/debit card to pay for the call?

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 15 Jun 2013 15:59

Getting back to phone boxes think they are probably still a necessity I for one don't like mobiles can never remember to re-charge them and as a result only use when we are on holiday, very silly of us I know like when we were in a car accident last year middle of nowhere and had to borrow someone's phone and I made a promise I would always keep my phone charged.....unfortunately have forgotten all about that. So yes I would use one in an emergency though not had to for a long time! :-So can we start the Save Our Phone Booths petition...much cleaned up though as they do Stink :-(

John it is known throughout the world as Paddy's Wigwam and most Liverpudlians I have met over the years (I have been to Liverpool many many times and even have relatives there) have used exactly the same term.

Mersey

Mersey Report 15 Jun 2013 15:52

Well it certainly does not upset worry me...us Liverpudlians have a sense of humour :-D :-D :-D :-D

John can you answer my question on the other thread just to clarify

Rambling

Rambling Report 15 Jun 2013 15:50

to clarify, I know what Paddy's Wigwam is, and don't think there are many who would object to the term. Liverpudlian's and the Irish are well known for their sense of humour :-) they have to be with all the flak directed at them :-)

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Jun 2013 15:50

Don't think he is sure at all. If he is referring to Liverpool Cathedral, it is a wonderfully constructed building. Never referred to as a tent, to my knowledge.

Expect we will soon get an apology for denigrating the work of Gilbert Scott, and apology to the people he refers to as "Paddys" and an apology to me and to you Rose.

But suspect he will gambol away from the scene as per usual. :-( :-(

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Jun 2013 15:47

oops meant t'other one lmao

Although I don't have a problem calling the catholic one Paddy's Wigwam - many in Liverpool do after all.

Rambling

Rambling Report 15 Jun 2013 15:42

erm are you sure Errol?

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Jun 2013 15:41

Very cleverly avoiding what edifice you are referring to as Paddy's Wigwam. That is what I and many in Liverpool will object to, as you full well know.

You would be the first to jump on anyone else who used such a derogatory expression.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Jun 2013 15:37

What, pray, did you think I meant John?

Never judge others by your own standards!

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 15 Jun 2013 15:36

Paddy's Wigwam was designed by the same chap who designed phone boxes.
Simples.
I fail to see how I could be judged by others for that comment. Beggars belief.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 15 Jun 2013 15:22

No, Rose. I have an idea what Errol meant, but doubt he will explain. Probably thought it was hilarious :-S
