The funeral is next Wednesday the 16th April.

ooooooo now I shall stick my head on the block here and say that when free school milk was introduced it was a necessity due to rationing and poor diet...1946 i believe?...by the 1970s..when i was receiving free school milk every day for no discernable reason...it had had it's day....folk in need were receiving benefit and food was much easier to come by.......*awaits the stoning*

I heard on the radio, as I listen during the night to five live, that Margaret Thatcher was part of the team who invented soft ice-cream as in Mr Whippy. As no -one else has discussed this .....was I dreaming???-jl

To a woman women's rights are a direct reaction to the "perception of women" by less intelligent men, Roy. Intelligent men have always perceived that women were their intellectual equals.

I've done quite a lot else as a contribution to society but I'm not dragging it all out here. I'm not one for blowing my own trumpet. We all play a part and most of us for the good.

Could we rein (should that be reign lol) things in slightly please before they get out of hand and argumentative - not addressing anyone in particular!

Also splitting hairs.....Queen Elizabeth 1st inherited the throne from her Sister Queen Mary.......so she wasn't an original in any way.

Saying that...one thing I do agree with is that despite being the first UK Woman Prime Minister...one thing Mrs Thatcher wasn't was a feminist and she did nothing to promote the cause of women in higher places directly...though I suspect the fact that she made it to such a high position did inspire many to strive higher.

On the other side of the coin I don't think she tried ever to play on being a *weak and feeble woman* either. She took no note of her sex for good or bad.... It was something I liked about her.

She was "standing on the shoulders of giants".

Slightly off topic, but in relation to who did what for woman, we should never forget the efforts of Emily Pankhurst and the other women of the suffragette movement. Many were were imprisoned in appalling conditions and several were forced fed after they went on hunger strike.

Lynda, I did say the first Queen Elizabeth, although I can see it doesn't look very clear in the font GR use..

To split hairs Thatcher was elected by the Tory party - they choose the Tory leader and the electorate vote for a local MP. The Tories won a majority and Thatcher was elected. The Tory party also got rid of her, not the electorate.
