The first time Conservatives were voted in with Mrs Thatcher at the helm was because just prior to the general election ,she called an inhouse election challenge against Ted Heath because she didnt agree with her fellow conservative policies,she won an inhouse vote,,Ted Heath was outed,,,,at the general election the next year she won,it just happened to be a woman canidate.

a few months into her third office her own party voted her out as PM because they found she was radical in her policies and wasnt for the job,,,,,she had to leave No 10 of course, the country had no PM,,,,so the job landed at the feet of Gordon Brown,as leader of the Labour party as they came second in the previous general election.
she did 2 and a third term in offce as PM.

I agree BC,,its terrible the way some are behaving,and should look at the bigger picture in that she was a much loved mother,a grandmother and aunt so some restraint wouldnt go amiss.perhaps there should have been a totally family funeral so they could be spared all this backlash from irate people.......

Gins ...... my family and I have suffered under many things....but I don't bear grudges and I'm not bitter - life is far too short to go down that road. :-D

Kay, I am aware of the world outside GR and of what is going on. I used 'GR' because this is where we having the discussions etc.

The lack of respect of people for anybody other than self is what is fueling these 'celebrations' etc.

As a woman I thought she was an inspiration.

To stand in the House Of Commons each week and for 13 years, hold her own in front of an audience of mostly men was fantastic. To travel the world and meet so many Statesman was brilliant and made us proud.

If she was hated so much and her policies were crap, who voted for her in 3 times as our Prime Minister. I repeat THREE times. Has anyone else achieved so much.

Listening to her speak was the first time I took interest in politics and started voting.

Gins it was just a request that we don't go down the path of comparing parties, leaders etc too much. This is a thread about Margaret Thatcher and not the ins and outs of which party did the least or most damage. As Muffy says, things like that can be debated at a later date.
Again, I wasn't directing my comment at any one individual, just asking that we keep this thread on an even keel and that it continues in the same, refreshingly unantagonistic way that it has done thus far.

I think we have some good 'arguments' without aggression

that's very true Kay...there are a fair few politicians I have zero respect for and disagree with almost everything they've done/stand for...I think we all do.

There are some who ..when they die...I won't shed any tears over....BUT....
What I won't do is go and celebrate, have a street party or make disparaging and vicious comments within hours of their death.If I have nothing nice to say I'll zip my mouth until a respectful amount of time has passed...or at the very very least tone it down a tad.

However..I do understand not everybody shares my views and I do note the ones on here who though they disliked her immensely have the common decency to hold back a bit ....I also notice those that don't.......but that's their call.

But it is deeply unpleasant what is happening 'out there'....just heard somebody say that the Fanatical, the Fixated, and the Foolish will be out in droves to show their disrespect.and make a mockery of the woman. For the life of me, I cannot see how this will change anything. I find the hatred very puzzling indeed and I, too, was around in the Thatcher years.

things put do not centre round the people of GR,there is a whole nation outside of GR,where no one will ever show respect for her,,,if you dont respect someone alive you cant change direction because of their demise,,,,,,its happening out there.

But I DID live under the MT reign, and TB, andI am not calling either of them - the point being made is that MT alone did not cause problems.
I sure will not be disrespectful to TB should he predecease me - that is not in my nature, nor the nature of many people on here.

People who lived under MT reign have the same contempt for her as others do for Blair.. can they see now why there is no respect.

Ididnt suffer from the aftermath of the Thatcher years either,

but i certainly suffered from the Blair years and the mess he left behind. :-(
