No reason at all Errol ! If someone makes a statement THEY must be the person to clarify it, not a third party, as presumably 'someone' read/heard about it from somewhere/someone in the first place, else why say it?! if they can't, then they shouldn't make the statement!!!!!

No, Muriel's maiden name is not a mystery, it's perfectly clear as was stated earlier. However, as there was a statement made to the effect that it WAS different to the one she was born with, all that is being asked here is that as a particular person made this statement, would it not be too much to ask for them to clarfy it, which seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable request. If they are able to do this, then ok, I for one would stand corrected, if, however, they made a genuine mistake, ok fine, we all do that from time to time, and that's fair enough, but to try to turn a perfectly reasonable request into some persecution saga is, well, a bit disingenuous! :-S :-S

The drug abuse increased in those areas was comparable to rest of the country with the exception of councils who thought it a good idea to house problem families together in certain areas, one such area is not far from me and the cost to the tax payer of such a policy is eye watering,

depopulation? large parts of South Yorkshire saw growth throughout the 1990's in both jobs and populations

In fact the mining village I was born in saw a population growth around 40% in the 90's

What began to change my views was 13 years ago when I was asked to do a history of a South Yorks mining village for the Millennium. I spent some time in the village and got to know a lot of residents.

I know Ashton under Lyne quite well.

My brother's wife came from there ................... and he DID walk from Oldham to Ashton and/or back many times when they were courting, around 1950/51.
They lived in Gorton Manchester from about 1955 on ........

........ but she left him and moved back to Dukinfield in the late 1980s to take care of her Mum, and still lives there, albeit now very doddery ........... not far from the Crematorium. There is a lovely view of Hartshead Pike from the Crem .............. I just love going to look over towards it.


Yes, the good thing about Oldham was that you could be out on the Moors within 10 minutes from the City Centre ..................... from 1951, we lived in Waterhead, on the Huddersfield Road ................ and within even easier each of the Moors, and not that far from the beginning slopes of the Pennines.


It was a 2 up 2 downer that my parents bought in 1928, and where I was born. I gather they are now pretty expensive to buy!
