The ice cream stuff is correct, in the early 1950's she worked as a research chemist for J. Lyons and Company in Hammersmith, she was part of the team developing emulsifiers for ice cream.

Have heard RentaMob were out in Bristol last night celebrating Mrs Thatchers death. Six or seven police officers were hurt trying to keep order.

I find this sickening. Can anyone tell me the last time this happened when a prominent person died.

Barb, she was deeply unpopular with a lot of people. I can't remember it happening before in my lifetime.

Just got back on here, thank you Gwynne :-D you posted my sentiments in a rational way.

Muffy re the milk: it was sorely missed in some parts of East London, there was uproar. I guess that might apply to other parts of the UK too.

Those of us not supporting some of her measures shouldn't be judged, we write from personal experience. What I achieved I did through my own hard work and enterprise as did many of my age group.

Were not those in need in receipt of free school meals then Sue?

There is already in the 'Right' newspapers an attitude of 'This is what "The Left" is like', the Philpotts, benefit cheats looters, rioters, anarchists.....

I do hope most people realise that "The Left" is not a seperate species.... it genuinely worries me that Mrs Thatcher's death will be used as a political tool, to make those who are worried about where the CURRENT government is leading us seem like anti-social outcasts, the dregs of society.

As someone who has always been on 'the left' of politics ( well relatively, dependent on how far to the right one is) I don't wish to be tarred with the same brush JUST because I am of "The left".

That kind of false division has provoked some terrible situations in the past, I do genuinely fear it will divide this country even more than the current economic situation has already done. ( I think it's dividing the board already!).

I used to have school milk, it provided a good extra source of calcium to supplement the school meal which did not always meet that need by itself, and building good bones seemed an 'essential' back then :-)

I could understand it if milk were still rationed..but I refuse to go along with it being an absolute necessityin the 1970s when it was readily available in the shops. Like now the country was on it's knees and certain decisions in the way of cutting spending had to be done....that seemed as sensible a way of saving some money as anything else.

Decisions did have to be made and money was needed - but why pick on the weakest? Why not put up income tax for the top 5%?

School milk was the only milk some children ever drank, at home it was pop or water. It was introduced as a much needed source of calcium, children didn't suddenly stop needing calcium.

How much money and damage will this rent a mob waste on something so puerile to get their anger satisfied?
We cannot change history,and who knows what the alternative to those years would have been had we had another leader!
Where do they get the money from?.I know that I have always been taught to waste not ,want not,and to me all these mobs do is to cause disruption to services and cost the country a lot of money.

Well from what I understand at the time the top rate of tax was already at around 75%....you can only milk the same cow so much !! (pardon the pun).

I was shocked this afternoon.
I was leaving the library. At the top of the stairs there was a small group of pensioners discussing Thatcher and how marvelous they thought she was.
One of the library assistants - a middle aged lady who had worked there for years and should know better - was standing on the stairs listening to them and laughing at them (they could not see her but could hear her).
She was obviously going on her lunch break because she then walked down the stairs and out of the door singing at the top of her voice "What a happy day, what a happy day, she's gone".
I find that sort of behaviour somewhat despicable and totally inexcusable.
