Lots of people BEFORE Mrs Thatcher "changed the perception of women", the suffragettes, the women of WW2, both those who were in the services, and those who did 'mens' jobs. She took one job that had never been done by a woman in THIS country...but it had been done by other women in other countries before that.

Margaret Bondfield,the first woman cabinet minister is known to have betrayed women.

I have said this without looking up the detail but I will do so. For some political reason,she signed away some proposed rights for married women.

Whilst it is true to say other women helped "changed the perception of women" before Margaret Thatcher She was OUR first women prime minister, so the first women to get the TOP JOB, in the UK

All aspects of life before that time where Male dominated,

How many women had the TOP JOB in medium to large companies before that time, And how many have the TOP JOB now, Even the Labour party recognised the importance of having women in a TOP JOB as a direct result of Margaret Thatcher being elected in the 1979 and so introduced all-women shortlists for electing Labour MP's in the 1990's

I have looked and I think it was the right to sickness benefits to women,or it could have been the right of married women to work.

Out of respect for other members I have refrained from posting my opinion but Roy has opened the door with his opinions and I feel I have to respond to his inflamatory post which has made me very cross and I find very insulting to all the women of GR.

I have played a part, Roy, I've campaigned for women's rights ever since the 1960s. I'm prepared to bet a lot of women on here did. Thatcher didn't do a great deal for women's rights. We did it for ourselves, long before she was elected. It was our campaigning and that of women before us that made it possible for her to aspire to the top job.

And Queen Elizabeth I had the "top job" all on her own in a much more male dominated world centuries before Thatcher.

You seem to be missing the FACTS of what has been posted.

MT,,,,,,,,,,,behind her she had the money to persue.......first her parents,then rich Denis,,,,,her children were off to boarding school from an early age,,,,,she had much nothing to hold her back,


She may have been the first PM but what a legacy shes left behind,,,,one of the most disliked,,,,,,,even her own party outed her from No 10.

Her own town arent proud of her,,,,,,that says it all.......

I don't usually see things in terms of what sex someone is. A person should get a job, for what they can bring to that job, not get the job for what sex they are.

Gwynne although The Queen has the "top job" there were Queens before her, and she wasn't elected. Margaret Thatcher was this Countries first woman Prime Minister.

Lynda, I did say the first Queen Elizabeth, although I can see it doesn't look very clear in the font GR use..

To split hairs Thatcher was elected by the Tory party - they choose the Tory leader and the electorate vote for a local MP. The Tories won a majority and Thatcher was elected. The Tory party also got rid of her, not the electorate.

Slightly off topic, but in relation to who did what for woman, we should never forget the efforts of Emily Pankhurst and the other women of the suffragette movement. Many were were imprisoned in appalling conditions and several were forced fed after they went on hunger strike.
