Further to my earlier comment about the Lord's prayer, I am reliably informed that the RC version is slightly different...for ref

My point remains the same however, that if a prayer common ( I think) to all denominations of the church is needed to 'share', then this is THE one.

For the record I like statues,and candles and beautiful windows,...it is a nod surely to 'the Glory of God' ( not my phrase but is my view). :-D

My closest Christian friend down here is a lady who cannot wait to get the candles out. And I can't wait to put them away.

She is a woman. She usually wins. So we continue any joint services we lead with a smell of burning and a fire risk :-D ;-)

I wonder about the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed. Could Protestants recite those together with Roman Catholics. Never done that, but suspect RC's also adhere to same form of words.

It may be my misfortune and random coincidence but of the 3 lay preachers I have encountered, all 3 of them preached one thing and did the opposite.

btw to respond to Hayley's early comment, I cross myself if I enter a Catholic church,and with Holy water, ..."when in Rome...." :-D

Prayer is very personal, I wouldn't dream of imposing my choice of how and where to do it on someone else. That to me would negate its valuie totally, I talk to God ( if he's there), how other people do, when they do , IF they do is up to them...I have reason to believe he will listen as much to them as he will to me.

Personally, I too love candles stain glass windows incense and all the trappings of the Anglo Catholic faith, which is what I was brought up with, but that is just 'me', no way would I ever seek to argue with anyone else who has different preferences. The times I have been to places of worship who prefer to talk to God in a more or less flamboyant way, then that's ok too - I just don't see that it matters; each to his own and tolerance to everyone!

I was raised in the Anglican Church, and was educated in a church school where we were thoroughly schooled in the church. The church (and therefore the school) that we attended was not then High Church, although I believe it has since become at least "higher" than it was. I heard a couple of years ago that the Vicar was called "Father".

I made a conscious decision at the age of 11 when I left that school to go on to the Grammar School that religion was no longer for me ................. the school had killed any love or desire in me.

However, I was intrigued by you remarks about the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed.

The Apostles Creed that I learnt so long ago, and which I can still recite with little attention to the printed copy was the "old" one used by the Anglican Church .................


I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:

etc


which was very similar to the version used by the Catholic Church ................

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

and to most other Christian churches, including Methodist.


The Nicene Creed, interestingly for those who do know, is named for and was adopted in the city of Nicaea (Iznik in what is now Turkey) by the first ecumenical council, which met there in the year 325 ............

and it of course is found in all Christian religions, both Eastern and Western in almost the same form.
