hmmmmmmmmmm

I answered on this thread because THIS was where I'd posted my comments originally, and therefore I thought that this was the suitable place.

As so many people have said, including yourself. .................. every paying member has a right to post on any thread, whenever they like as long as they are not being abusive, or otherwise unpleasant.

so this is not YOUR thread ............... it is on a public forum, and as such, any member can post on it.

You cross-contaminated by posting the above message, and by RR'ing mine posting.

I do congratulate you on being honest about what you have done!

Dear Athiest in Wales

I responded on the (this) thread because that was where the original remarks were made ............ and because I wanted to keep controversy off (the other) thread. (That thread) has managed to remain non-controversial for almost the whole time since it was started ...... largely due I believe to the efforts of Cynthia who is held in high regard by most, if not all, GR members, including myself.

but perhaps not you?

As you have RR'd my posting from (this) thread ................ I will reply to your demand.

I found your juvenile joking about the possible variation in electing a new Pope extremely disrespectful to the Catholic religion, and to the members of the Catholic Church.

I am not religious, as I have stated many times, but I do believe in respect for ALL religions, including athiest and Wiccan, etc, and in respect for all members of those religions.

That disrespect is what disgusted me!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2013 04:20

Sorry Linda

I did not intend to ignore you.

I was called away as soon as I posted.

As I have been told many times ........ everyone has the right to post on any of the threads posted in a public forum

I am pleased, nay glad, that you found the remarks funny, even though you are a Catholic

I am nominally an Anglican, at least that is the religion in which my parents raised me ..............

........ I did find the remarks about new ways to elect a new pope demeaning and disrespectful.

we differ

is that so bad?

I was not speaking, nor did I intend to speak, on anyone else's behalf, except my own ................... I do have that right!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2013 04:24

PS ....................

Linda

I AM the only one likely to be around at this time of night.

People in the UK are very probably fast asleep :-D

so I am assuming that your post (C&P'd below) was directed at me!

LindaB Report 12 Feb 2013 04:02

So my posting goes ignored...sad!

Linda

I believe I have answered you

I do note that the original version of your post was changed

The original version read .............

LindaB Report 12 Feb 2013 04:02

So my posting goes ignored...what a shame...I am a Catholic surely I have a say as it is my religion I don't need anyone speaking for me tbh.

Linda

again .......... I still believe that I answered you, as soon as I saw what you had posted!

I can't keep up with the editing of Linda's post!!

It changes every minute

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2013 04:48

I will post here that we will be away from Tuesday morning until some time on Friday.

I will not be using any computer while away, thus not accessing any internet sites

Therefore, the fact that I do not respond to any further comments from anyone else merely means that I have not seen it, and to nothing else!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2013 05:20

sorry if you think I made you look a morn ..... EDIT moron

I did not intend to

But I was feeling flummoxed by the changes

I was beginning to doubt my own sanity!

An agnostic speaks ;-)

I've read this thread twice and can't find a post anywhere making mock of a frail old man. I have seen some joshing of 2 religions on this thread but wonder why it is only the jokes about the catholic church that have been objected to.

What is it about the catholic church that should make it immune from humour? I would like to think that catholics can make fun of themseves. I think they can - Father Ted proved that.

Ok - some people find it disrespectful but so what? I see posts on here daily that are disrespectful of all manner of things I hold dear, it's a public forum and that's what happens. I've seen a lot worse than this on other forums and all over Facebook. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it isn't. But humour is subjective other people may find it funny, even if I don't.

Nothing posted here about the catholic church was abusive or hateful - to quote GR's guidelines. As it happens I have very little respect for the catholic church but I won't bore you all with my reasons - they are pretty obvious to most.

Just because it's a religion does not mean it should automatically be respected, scientology is a religion and I don't respect that either. I do respect people's right to believe whatever they want but that doesn't mean I have to respect what they believe.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2013 06:27

sooooooo

I seem to be in the minority, and maybe even a minority of one, in finding the jokes distasteful and disrespectful of a religion and its practices.

That's OK .........

......... even a minority of one should be regarded with respect, and not dismissed out of hand!

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 12 Feb 2013 06:40

I respect you, Sylvia, but that doesn't mean I have to respect your opinions. I do respect your right to hold and express them, though.

I hope that makes a sort of sense.

Child abuse is disrespectful...damming and denying homosexuals is disrespectful.denying women their human rights is disrespectful.,,,,,,cosseting fallen clergy behind walls instead of doing the right thing and making them face the law is disrespectful to the victims,,,,,,,,.now claim respect for that, but that aside...........

I don´t have any strong religious views. but can´t help thinking that Dave Allen would be having a field day.

supercrutch Report 12 Feb 2013 08:08

Oh dear, ruffled feathers :-D

I am grateful for the additional posts agreeing that nowhere have we been disrespectful to one frail old man.

The jokes about the election process are simply that..jokes. This thread could have been filled with posts highlighting the failings of the RC church and there are many. To balance that there are quite a few in all religions but this thread is about the RC hence the content.

Yes Dave Allen would have plenty of material if he were still around.

I don't seem to have to justify my actions as Sylvia has reported part of the original again. Now fellow members can decide for themselves. By all means report something truly offensive to the RC church but none of the above fall into that category.

The comedians are going to have a field day so anyone who considers Pope Idol as mocking had better keep their TVs turned off.

Now who has any suggestions for signalling the election for a new pope was successful?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 12 Feb 2013 08:43

In order to maintain harmony on the boards I will keep my comments to the Christian thread where they will be more appropriate and less likely to cause aggravation and controversy.

I only added to this thread in the beginning because I thought it was going to be interesting.

Supercrutch, I am not in the least offended by atheists or their views. Apart from my banter with Eldrick, I have never mocked their views or thoughts on the subject but simply left them to their musings rather than jump in and start criticising.

PP I realise that the Pope is surrounded by thousands - but it is very lonely at the top. That's where the buck stops. Most clergy would admit that it is, indeed, a lonely profession at times because you have to be so careful in whom you confide.

Ann, I know many clergy who have a brilliant sense of humour but, irreverence is something else. Most of them would draw the line at some point saying "enough is enough".

I loved the Vicar of Dibley (mostly) and Dave Allen but was never keen on the Father Ted series. I don't know if anyone remembers a series from yonks ago....."All Gas and Gaiters" which really extracted the Michael from the C. of E. I think Derek Nimmo was in it.

Thank you for starting the thread Supercrutch - I hadn't heard the news till I spotted it. I will now leave you in peace.

Just to bring a bit of light humour to the thread, I wonder if Prince Charles keeps saying:-

Mummy, Mummy, look Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has resigned and now the Pope has resigned ;-)

Reading back it appears my mention of blancmange caused a bit of eye brow raising...the reason i made the comment is that it is an *in joke* from years ago on here between Sue and I..which is why I addressed my comment specifically to her....didn't expect very many others to get it....just thought I'd clarify that. lol.

I'm glad others can see that there was no malice meant by the *pope idol* thing....I joke about pretty much everything where I can...it's the way I roll....if I'd have mocked the man himself then I could kind of see the point in the furore....a bit....but I didn't...and nor did anyone else..

Hoping someone takes sue up on her suggestion re the announcement....my thinking cap is firmly on lol

AnnCardiff Report 12 Feb 2013 13:13

there was/is no malice toward the Pope - and I absolutely love having a laugh about most things - and idea of Pope Idol appealed to me so much :-D :-D :-D
