If John's starred out words are nitty gritty then he needs to recheck the source for his comments.

There is no contemporaneous definition of the phrase that can be proven as derogatory. If there was do you think that companies would be licensed to use those two words in their company name and products? Singers who adopted the name or songs with it in the track titles?

I hope you express your disgust everytime it's used by politicians as pillars of our society?

I would have thought that you would have been more upset at the use of gawd and blimey.

Still the post bumps Ann's total up on this thread :-D

Guinevere Report 13 Feb 2013 10:28

There is some dispute about that John.

"the view that "nitty-gritty" has slave connotations "may belong in the same line of folklore which holds that a picnic was a slave lynching party," writes lexicographer Michael Quinion in his World Wide Words website. "Its origins are elusive," writes Mr Quinion, but it is "inconceivable that it should have been around since slave-ship days without somebody writing it down [until the mid-20th Century]." "

Dr Jonathan Lighter, editor of the Historical Dictionary of American Slang, records the first example from 1956: "You'll find nobody comes down to the nitty-gritty when it calls for namin' things for what they are."

Oooh Hayley, I cant believe you would use bad language, a sweet an innocent little lady like yourself ;-)

It doesnt take much common sense to think about the terminologies we use on an open forum. I myself use the odd expletive but wouldnt dream of using such words one here.....well, not unless I got REALLY mad!

Trouble with common sense..........it's not very common

Please don't think I am defending the use of offensive words because I am not I did wince when I read Terry's post and as I said I honestly don't think he used it as an insult because if he did I would of been the 1st to hit the RR button and would of said so. Its obvious Terry does use other chat forums that probably use some words more freely then we on GR would without concern.

I called someone once on here a pr*tt now where I come from its not swearing or even a very bad insult I couldnt understand why the person was so insulted till he told me its as bad as saying Tw*t where he came from.

When pushed I use swear words that would make a docker blush, however for instance at work there is one women that hates swearing and of course then I watch my P & Q's when I am near her. :-D

well it's three strikes and you're out terryj - if someone feels the need to report your postings again we may well have seen the last of you - I shan't do it as I've already done two - might look like harassment to GR and I have complained to them separately about your homophobic terminology

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 13 Feb 2013 09:20

I agree totally with what has been said about Terry's use of language. He makes his points and doesn't need to use those words in full.

One word that we should not use is n*tty gr**ty. I have just found where that came from, and it is realy horrible.

Hope this isn't too off topic. But people often wonder about the origin of the word Methodist. Well, that was about the biggest insult you could pay to somebody in the early 18th century.

There are more acceptable words under the heading 'language of love' as there are in the opposite heading.

Talk tidy.

Hayley

You may well be right, I might have got the wrong end of the stick but you are also right about editing the 'P' word, I dont think any of us would consider posting the full 'F' word on here which is equally offensive

Terrj, please edit that word and maybe consider your terminology in future postings

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 13 Feb 2013 00:13

I am sorry I too hate the P word which Terry has used however I feel if he was trying to offend on purpose that he wouldnt of used the word Asian I think he was trying to say that the lads wearing the tee shirts were making a statement, Terry if I were you I would of edited the word like this P*** , we all would of got the gist.... just saying

I have gay driends in both camps (no pun intended). Some are happy to live together but complications arise when one is in hospital and the partner is treated as an outsider.

Others who say the civil partnership is just fine.

The remainder who are the most outgoing and have a huge circle of friends want the whole hog.

I just want all of them to have the right to be treated with equality (plus I get to buy the mother of the bride outfit at long last).

You attempt to guise your posts, with ignorance, I am offended that you assume we are not able to see 'you' .

You have used horrid, offensive words, some deleted, but I will RR your latest posts, if you do not amend them.

You are a bigot, attempting to be closeted....you're not bright enough!

Check: There, Their, They're! And......'ious' ;-)

http://queersagainstthecuts.wordpress.com/

to those who complained about my original first post notice the name
they reclaimed the word for there own use years ago on the basis i beleive that if you use it yourself neanderthal man is stuck for an insult
there are plenty more examples
i know there is/was a bar in manchester called queers and a lot lgbt groups use the word as a label

I have spoken to a couple of gay lads I know who had a civil ceremony last October and they have said quote" As far as we are concerned we are married and don't need a marriage in a church to signify that we love each other and intend stopping together for the rest of our lives.""unquote

Thye also told me that they have both made a will which states that whoever died first, the other one left will be respnsible for the funeral arrangements, also in the will they have named a couple of friends/family who will take over the funeral arrangements for the person who is left.

I think what they say and have done is good.

Maybe not right for everyone but right for them.
