As we are now talking about Tesco, I remember 3 CEO's before Terry Leahy:
1. Hyman Kreitman
2. Lesley Porter
3. Ian MacLaurin

Kreitman was husband of eldest daughter of the old man (Sir John Cohen). Porter was husband of younger daughter (Shirley Porter). MacLaurin took over about 1978 and was the first CEO outside family, And Leahy took over from him about 1990, I think - just as I left and joined Budgens. And now Philip Clarke.

Leahy was by far the least nice of them. But he was both ruthless and charming.

Yes Wend, I thought someone on here must have shares in Tecso, so I thought I would just mention it ;-) ;-)

I listened to that too Paula and, as you say, it was very interesting and he sounded a delightful man, but I can't think for the life of me what it has to do with this thread :-0

I heard Sir Terry Leahy ex CEO of Tesco on Dersert Island Discs last week. He talked about how he was an unlikely success. His parents were poor Irish immigrants. There were no books in his prefab home or academic aspirations. But he I won a scholarship to the best grammar school in Liverpool, which pulled him up and got him to university. He sounded a really decent chap still had his Liverpool accent, very articulate and funny. He said he had three great loves, his wife, his football team and Tesco.

Well I think John should invite me to pop over to his house and show me his gold plated turnip on the mantelpiece. :-D :-D :-D

JOHN - You keep going on about poor wages. Now were you really a manager or were you a shelf stacker - theres a big difference in wages. If you were a stacker how did you reach the top shelves because you mentioned a while back that you were about 5ft tall.

I am just so thankful that in my working life (Board room level of large International Companies.,) I never, ever, came across one such as John.

However the expression comes to mind 'if they are bolshy and cause trouble - promote them upstairs'.

Because it's early morning here I have read all the pages since I left the thread last night (my time).

John - you made a comment on pg 19 at 10.49 quote "the batting expression SueMaid used earlier which I forget but that was new to me."

At no time did I make any comment using that expression so please check in future before making such statements.

John if for once you used your brain rather than your ego you would see that the posts appeared at the same time give or take a few seconds.
