MrD Are old memories coming back?

"Oes gafr eto?" is a favourite kid's song. Gets faster and faster as you build up the goats. Gafr wen (white goat), gafr ddu (black), gafr las (blue) until about 8 goats needing milking - heb eu godro.

Gwersi Cymraeg am rhad ac am ddim (free Welsh lessons) ;-)

No John .this man...or mirage ...was much taller and certainly thinner than Russell Grant...Think he had R L embroidered in big letters on the front of his habit.
I was so near to the castle as I turned the corner that I could see his thin features quite clearly.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 6 Jan 2013 22:22

Brenda. That must have been Russell Grant. No other men in Wales would dress so provocatively :-D ;-)

AnnCardiff

'Cariwch', medd Dafydd, 'fy nhelyn i mi,
Ceisiaf cyn marw roi tôn arni hi.
Codwch fy nwylo i gyraedd y tant;
Duw a'ch bendithio fy ngweddw a'm plant!'
'Neithiwr mi glywais lais angel fel hyn:
"Dafydd, tyrd adref, a chwarae trwy'r glyn!"
Delyn fy mebyd, ffarwel i dy dant!
Duw a'ch bendithio fy ngweddw a'm plant!'

'Bring me my harp', was David's sad sigh,
'I would play one more tune before I die.
Help me, dear wife, put the hands to the strings,
I wish my loved ones the blessing God brings.'
'Last night an angel called with heaven's breath:
"David, play, and come through the gates of death!"
Farewell, faithful harp, farewell to your strings,
I wish my loved ones the blessing God brings.'
:-D :-D

Unfortunately John, although you are correct about defaid (sheep), Dafad is a goat...

:-D

Re the beautiful song, quote Cariwch, medd Dafydd, fy nhelyn imi unquote, the first two lines translate :

Bring me my harp, was David's sad sigh (your first line),
'I would play one more tune before I die

From Dafydd y Garreg Wen.

Ddysgu ychydig mwy o Gymraeg (oh, dear, I'm a bit rusty .... hope I got that right!!!)
But you're not doing tooo bad!

Have been out to lunch today in Gyffin Conwy and seen the first newborn Welsh lambs out in the field and there were a lot of Welsh ponies out in the next field gazing at them.....shame ...not a Druid in sight...or a standing stone!

FGS, Dafad y Garreg Wen is a very famous song sung to Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills" It is about a Hell's Angel who loves his sheep (defaid), and then slaughters his favourite (dafad) and eats him on Garreg Wen.
Dafydd y Garreg Wen is a rather lovely song, often sung by Male Voice Choirs and accompanied by a harpist who charges £2 a pluck.

When have the Treorchy Male Voice Choir sang anything that resembles "Run to the Hills". :-0 :-0 :-0 :-| :-| :-| Get it sorted!!!!!

Sandie. :-D :-D Just the most beautiful words in either Welsh or English. Always loved it so much. :-D Used to know it all in Welsh - think it starts "Cariwch, medd Dafydd, fy nhelyn imi..."

The English version as I was taught for our annual school Eisteddfod was----

Bring me said David the harp I adore
I long how death calls me to play it once more
Help me to believe my beloved friends again
Widows and children gods blessing remain.

Last night I heard a fine angel just say
David fly home on the wings and thus play
Harp of my youth and my blessing remain ( ?)
Widows and children gods blessing remain.

There are many different versions.
