My subs run out on the 22nd and had been a free member for the last few days. When I clicked on subscribe they were offering me 6 months for 1.33 a month so £7.98.

The reason I am able to post is because they gave me a free month this morning for helping on the WDYTYA board???

Now when I click on subscribe they want me to pay £2.00 a month so £12.00 for 6 months....I was keeping my options open as to whether to re-subscribe again......now I dont think I will bother

The auto renew is fine as long as your details don't change. However, what happens if you change bank accounts or get a new bank card?
I used to pay £9.95 for the 12 months. In 2009 I changed banks so of course the payment details were changed - ergo, no longer renewed automatically.
I thought I'd end up with the 6-month option but instead it was renewed for £7.96 for 12 months! I paid simply because it was a good deal.
The same happened May 2010; May 2011 and May 2012. Wonder what will happen this year?? If it's £7.96 they get their money and I stay as a member, though I rarely use the site now. If it's £20 (or near offer!!) then hard cheddar as I'm offski!

As Jude says - subterfuge and inconsistency and as Joy says, inconsistency and more confusion.
Hmm... wonder if they've thought of standing for Parliament... subterfuge, inconsistency and confusion.. now where have I heard that before?!

More confusion.

No Sylvia never did anything like that either....I really don't know. I don't remember doing anything that would "break my membership"...but as I say it is so long ago who knows?

Even when I have turned autorenew off it has only been to take the payment date beyond my wages going into my account!!

Jude

you didn't happen to change your sub for one of the higher priced ones did you?? eg. Gold when it first came out

They do count that as breaking your Standard membership.

The, when you dropped back down to Standard, they switched people to 6 months, and increased the cost.

Thanks wisechild,

I've been a standard member on Auto renewal since June 2008 and as far I can recall my subs have always been £ 7.96 for 6 months.
( I've put the auto renewal back on btw in case they up it to £9.95 )
£7.96 is 20% of £9.95.
I'll contact them before my renewal date for a 'quote ' as to what my renewal will be.
That will be interesting !! Perhaps I'll ask to be dealt with by Nia :))

Jax,

As far as I am aware I have had continuous membership since I joined...but then who remembers nine years ago???? Until last September of course...and then I only let it lapse a day....

I just know until a year or so ago, it was £9.95 per six months and then it went down to £7.96 per six months.

In all honesty I am quite happy with £15.92 per year - it's a bargain. What I am not happy with is all this subterfuge and inconsistent pricing. There should be no discount for loyalty (and certainly not for new members). There should be one CLEAR price with the discount only being applied for prompt payment.

Sandie.
I may be wrong about this, but I think it´s only people who have had continuous membership of 12 months without any alteration, since before mid 2007 who are getting their renewals at the very low rate.
Of course I could be wrong as there doesn´t seem to be any lucid explanation forthcoming from Genes.
I have however just had an e mail from the Customer Services manager thanking me for taking the time to thank the girl who dealt with my query.
isn´t it usual to say thank you?
Should I thank him for thanking me?.
This could turn into a mutual admiration society. ;-)

You have always had a month ro renew, as far as I know?

For the last couple of years 6 months membership has been £15 my auto renew is off and I have paid £9.95 less any discount

*$parkling $andie* Report 11 Feb 2013 15:36

In view of wisechilds comment about switching off one's auto renew ,will make it look as if one is a new subscriber ....do you think I ought to put it back on again ??

Any thoughts please ??

Jude

Have you had a break for more than a month since you joined in 2004?

There is still no rhyme nor reason. I am still not satisfied. Have to wait until I get my second wind. Am dressed today - first time in 10 days!!!!

wisechild

wisechild Report 11 Feb 2013 14:11

Maybe because you switched off your auto renew, your sub was counted as being new instead of continuous.
I switched off my auto renew when the whole problem started back in Dec or Jan but switched it back on a couple of days later when I first suspected this might be the case.
Quite apart from all that, the whole thing is a complete shambles & there have been no explanations forthcoming from Genes.
I seem to remember that when the 6 months option was first introduced, Genes said that if your membership lapsed for any reason, you would no longer be offered the option of 12 months but that was at least 5 or 6 years ago, so how would they expect anyone to remember.

*$parkling $andie* Report 11 Feb 2013 14:09

Quite a confusing issue about subs isn't it :-S

I have now changed from Auto renew !! I wonder what I will be offered to renew in July ?

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 11 Feb 2013 13:59

none of which explains why I get six months membership.......because I have been a member since 2004

so if Wisechild is correct and the six months has only been since 2007 then why was an arbitrary decision made to put some people on six months and some on 12 months?

Auto renew off until I get update. If they hold it at £7.96 for six months I don't mind but I will ask the question as to why some members of less years membership get twelve months for that!

Thelma.
Just had an e mail from a very helpful person called Nia.
For those who have 12 months membership & whose sub is not increasing, you get 14 days notice.
For those whose sub is increasing its 28 days notice.
She has confirmed that I will continue 12 months membership at 67p per month.
Result!!!

Thelma

Thelma Report 11 Feb 2013 11:46

Mine is due in the next few days and I have had the £7.96 E mail.
Will be very annoyed if is for only six months.
However at "subscribe" it does state 67p monthly.

wisechild

wisechild Report 11 Feb 2013 07:22

Clutching at straws a bit here, but until about mid 2007, there was only a 12 month sub. Then the 6 months option was introduced.
Possibly the members who originally had 12 months membership (i.e. before mid 2007) are the ones who are now continuing on 12 months.
But who knows??? :-S :-S :-S :-S :-S

No Sandie...I have not been a member as long as John but longer than Julia...and they only offer me six months.
