Good morning :-)
~~~~~~ waving to kandj :-D
Everyday sayings – straight from the bible!
A leopard cannot change his spots. Jeremiah 13:23 “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good, who are accustomed to do evil.”
Go the extra mile. Matthew 5:41 “and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile”.
United we stand. Divided we fall. Matthew 12:25, 26 “He knew what they were thinking and said to them, ‘Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?
The blind leading the blind. Matthew 15:14 Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another both will fall into a pit.’
Welcome home kandj - good to have you back again <3
Vera.....................and there's more! :-D
Everyday sayings – straight from the bible!
A fly in the ointment. Ecclesiastes 10:1 Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a foul odour; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honour.
A drop in the bucket. Isaiah 40:15 Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust.
Rise and shine. Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.”
Lovely to see you back kandj :-). Isn’t it frustrating when silly little things like renewing a sub don’t go right. You mentioned a while ago that life was throwing you some challenges. I hope things are much easier now. I know your faith will give you the strength to cope with any problems.
A lovely theme again this week Cynthia. Thank you. I love language and am always googling to find the origins of words and phrases so this week’s posts are “right up my street”.
Hello all
I'M BACK..................... at long last, and feeling very thankful to be allowed to join in this thread again.
"Thank you" is the best prayer that anyone can say. I say that one a lot. Thank you expresses extreme gratitude, humility and understanding. (Alice Walker).
No sign of kandj - so frustrating for her!
Everyday sayings from scripture....
Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die. This seems to have been a theme in the bible.
Ecclesiastes 8:15 “So I commend enjoyment, for there is nothing better for people under the sun than to eat, and drink, and enjoy themselves, for this will go with them in their toil through the days of life that God gives them under the sun”.
Isaiah 22:13 “But instead there was joy and festivity, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating meat and drinking wine. Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die”.
Luke 12:19 “And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry’”.
Fancy that! More everyday sayings originating from the bible.
Out of the mouths of babes. Psalm 8:2 "Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger".
Pride goes before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall".
A time and place for everything. Ecclesiastes 3:1 "For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven".
Good morning :-)
In his sermon yesterday, the vicar mentioned how many sayings actually derive from chickens! Eg. ‘Pecking order’; ‘ruffling one’s feathers’; ‘taking under your wing’ to name just a few. I looked it up, and the number is incredible.
It’s often interesting to know where some of our everyday sayings come from and, actually, many are from the good old bible!
Earn something by the sweat of your brow. Genesis 3:19 "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
A man after my own heart. 1 Samuel 13:14 "But now your kingdom will not continue; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart; and the Lord has appointed him to be ruler over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you."
Nothing but skin and bones and Escaped by the skin of my teeth. Job 19: 19 "All my intimate friends abhor me and those whom I loved have turned against me." 20 "My bones cling to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth."
Poor kandj is still struggling to rejoin us - she can see all the posts on her threads, but can't respond. Hope it gets sorted soon.
The Collect (special prayer) for today: O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Good morning :-)
Dear Lord Jesus:
As I go about my housework Let me see each job I do, As a service for my King And a way of loving You.
Let me wash away my judgments Of others doing right or wrong, As I’m washing up the dishes Place within my heart a song.
As I clean up little handprints Along with lots of muddy shoes, I recall you washing feet Of the loved ones you did choose.
As I mend those torn pyjamas And then, I sew a button on, Show me how to mend a breech That's gone on for far too long.
Let me tidy up my thoughts As I tidy up the toys, Let me sweep away my fears Like the dirt from little boys.
May I be quick with my forgiveness As I am with mop and broom, Sweeping up the mess and clutter In my heart and living room.
May I wash out pride and ego As I rinse the bathtub out, And, while we are at it, Lord Let's take care of, hate and doubt.
You know Lord, I’ve been thinking about all the work we need to do, I think we'd better do a house clean At least each day or even two.
Praying through housework:
TAKING THE BINS OUT – a job we all love! A weekly chore and a weekly check on which colour bin is going out! What a perfect time for praying for the men who empty our bins, for our neighbours, and for our community. We can ask God to look after these people, to be with them, and pray that they may come to know him – maybe through us.
Praying through the housework
LAUNDRY – for those with washing machines, it’s so easy to pop the dirty clothes in and press a few buttons. However, drying them can depend on the weather. I recently read somewhere that only ‘old’ people hang their washing out to dry! Really? What better way to dry laundry than by hanging it in the fresh air? This can remind us of how God washes away our sins and gives us a great opportunity to pray for forgiveness for the things we’ve done wrong.
After the clothes are dried and aired, we can thank God for his forgiveness and ask for help to be better in the future. We can also pray for those who have limited access to water. We take so much for granted sometimes.
Praying through the housework
WASHING UP – not everyone has a dishwasher and many still wash dishes by hand. If this applies to us, we could listen to some hymns and sing along with them. We can pray for the people who have used the dishes we are washing. We can think about the people who wash the dishes at church and offer them to God.
Glad you enjoyed the smiles last week Vera - I try and keep the thread varied. How lovely to see family members again after such a long time. You will have had lots to catch up on. That exhibition sounds amazing - various cathedrals are putting on different events at the moment - some good and some rubbish (I didn't say that! hahaha). The one you saw seems worth a visit. <3
Praying our way through housework!
DUSTING is a bit of a chore at times. Lots of different types of dusters on the market – long ones for reaching up to the tops of doors and corners; fluffy ones for delicate items and those made from microfibre which can tackle most things. As we look upwards to cobwebs and corners, we can focus on who God is and all that he has done for us. We can thank him for being our protector and ask for his guidance on any problems we may have.
I enjoyed last week’s silly season. I usually look in first thing and it was good to start the day with a smile. I’m not so sure about this week’s theme ;-). I like to have a bright clean house but I don’t like the housework necessary to achieve it.
You are right about being thankful for visitors . We recently had OH’s youngest sister and her husband for a couple of nights and it was such a pleasure, particularly as we hadn’t seen them for 4 years. On one very hot day we took them to St Edmundsbury Cathedral where there was an exhibition of a textile interpretation of the Creation. It consists of 12 very large panels depicting various stages of the Creation. It was all made by Jacqui Parkinson and took her 3 years to complete. The workmanship is amazing. It is touring around various cathedrals and I would recommend it if it comes to a cathedral near you. It’s called Threads Through Creation and you might like to have a look at the website where all the panels are shown
Something which most of us have in common is doing housework. Some people love it - some hate it. Some can get through it quickly, whilst others take their time. One way of dealing with the chores is to pray our way through them!
HOOVERING for example, can be a pain but it gives us the opportunity of going into each room and thanking God for the things that have happened in each room over the last few weeks. Maybe we have had visitors – we can thank God for those people. Perhaps, whilst hoovering the bedroom, we could ask God for help in getting more restful sleep. We’ll move on tomorrow ??
Good morning... :-)
It's the silly season!
MOTHERS!
Columbus' Mother: "I don't care what you've discovered, Chris. You still could have written."
Michelangelo's Mother: "Mike, can't you paint on walls like other children? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that stuff off the ceiling?"
Batman's Mother: "It's a nice car, Bruce, but do you realize how much the insurance is going to be?"
Goldilocks Mother: "I've got a bill here for a broken chair from the Bear family. Do you know anything about this, Goldie?"
Albert Einstein's Mother: "But, Albert, it's your senior picture. Can't you do something about your hair? Styling gel, mousse, something...?"
Superman's Mother: "Clark, your father and I have discussed it, and we've decided you can have your own telephone line. Now will you quit spending so much time in all those phone boxes?"
Thomas Edison's Mother: "Of course, I'm proud you invented the electric light bulb, Thomas. Now turn off that light and get to bed."
You are allowed to groan! :-D :-D
It's the silly season :
A Baptist preacher went to see a member of the community and invited him to come to Church on Sunday morning. The man was a producer of fine peach brandy and told the preacher he would love to attend his Church IF the Pastor would drink some of his brandy and admit doing so in front of the congregation. The preacher agreed and drank up.
Sunday morning came and the man came to Church. The preacher recognized him from the pulpit and said: "I see Mr. Johnson is here with us this morning. I want to thank him publicly for his hospitality this week and especially for the peaches he gave me and the spirit in which they were given."
It’s the silly season!
George W. Bush, in an airport lobby, noticed a man in a long flowing white robe with a long white beard and flowing white hair. The man had a staff in one hand and some stone tablets under the other arm.
George W. approached the man and inquired, "Aren't you Moses?" The man ignored George W. and stared at the ceiling.
George W. positioned himself more directly in the man's view and asked again, "Aren't you Moses?" The man continued to peruse the ceiling.
George W. tugged at the man's sleeve and asked once again, "Aren't you Moses?" The man finally responded in an irritated voice, "Yes I am."
George W. asked him why he was so uppity, and the man replied, "The last time I spoke to a Bush I had to spend forty years in the desert."
