For what it’s worth, Clichés are old hat to be honest. When the chips are down, I prefer to pick the low hanging fruit and hit the ground running. Whilst not averse to some poetic license, my world view is that some serious reality checks help prevent rose tinted glasses. So if you absolutely must use mixed metaphors, it’s time to grab the bull by the tail and look him in the eye. Use plain old England, it’s like falling off a piece of cake. Here endeth the lesson.

"Squad will move to the left in threes"
"You are like a group of Chinese washerwomen with no work to do" from the RSM - "sharpen up, lads" would have sufficed.

Misuse of LESS and FEWER.

When asked "How are you?" The answer often given is "I am GOOD"

Maggie Never heard silos - perhaps more recent.

But "let's brainstorm", "let's run it up the flagpole" were common expressions.

'No worries' and being called 'guys' and 'catch you later' from someone you will probably never meet again!!

A few years back, managers at work kept talking about 'silo's' - silo thinking, silo mentality etc what was that about?
I used to spend the rest of the meeting working out how a silo could possibly think or have a brain.

Another bugbear, currently in use is starting the answer to a question with 'So'.

Nothing more annoying than the incorrect use of the word ... LIKE.
Point it out, and the response is usually "talk to the hand coz the face isn't listening"

It gets me like,....so annoyed!!!!!

Sylvia. Just thinking that my idea of mwahing everybody instead of saying "How Are You?" might not work so well in a doctor's surgery.

Friendliness could really become contagious :-( :-(

Not a phrase I know but the one that really annoys me is Haitch, instead of Aitch. M

How many times have we asked someone we see in the doctors surgery "how are you " I have done this myself . Silly question really .

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 4 Dec 2012 17:12

We always ask "How Are You?" I always ask that of an 87yo uncle via email. Last time he replied with an attachment. A page and a half of hospital notes.

And the answer to the greeting "How are You" and "Alright" is to say the same words back. Why don't we just mwah everybody instead? :-)
